July 09 OBLC

Published

I am (hopefully) going to be attending the July 09 OBLC course at FSH. Is anyone else going during this time. I would love to know someone prior to going. I am prior service Army as a LPN, so this is my first stint with the Officer side. If there is anyone who has recently attended OBLC, I would love some feedback. This experience has been quite different than my enlisted one. Not to mention, I got out in 1998, so things have changed. Thanks!

I'm from Kentucky, so I can tell you a little about Ft Knox (though I've never actually set foot inside the post!). Ft Knox is in Radcliff, an extremely unappealing town (a suburb of Elizabethtown, of movie fame, though the movie was not actually shot there). Fortunately, all these places are only 45 minutes away from Louisville, which has all the standard attractions of a large city (1 million in the metro area). One thing to note: Ft Knox is in a dry county, which means you can't buy alcohol, at all. You have to go to a neighboring county. Although...you can probably buy it on post, since that's federal land. Anyway, Kentucky has very distinct seasons, which some people really like. Western Kentucky is flat with lots of corn fields; central Kentucky has rolling hills (like England); Eastern Kentucky is in the Appalachian mountains. Ft Knox is in west-central. If you like hiking, fishing or river/creek kayaking, then Kentucky is the place for you. If you prefer trendy, happening places, well...perhaps consider somewhere else. ;) I personally love my state, but it does have its limitations.

Thank you so much for the info, kyeplorer! It sounds like a nice relaxing area... I made the decision (finally) to take the Landstuhl position... hopefully the HRC will not change their minds... I think I will be better suited over there! If anyone has Landstuhl info, I'd love to hear it too! I appreciate any info!

I just got word today that I will be attending the July 09 OBC class! Wow just 4 weeks away. Any advice?

I am going to be in the July 09 OBC class too!! Well, just so long as I pass boards. I take them this Friday (19 Jun). I am nervous. I'm not excited about that summer heat, but if I have to hang out at home with my parents being broke til October, I will be seriously bummed. Besides, the faster I get it done, the sooner I can move on to my first duty station...Tripler!! Woo Hawaii here I come. Anyone else get Tripler?

How did you get orders and an OBC spot before passing boards? I was told nothing could happen till then, thats why I just got mine today. I wanted Sam Houston but got Fort Hood. I was told it was because I just got my license number friday and orders couldnt come till then! ugh, welcome to the army.

Hmm that's weird...I'm not sure. Maybe it depends where you live, etc? I just graduated, and I got commissioned into the IRR in January. I received my phone call from Maj. Hairston about a month ago confirming my spot in July and asking me where I wanted to go for my first duty assingment. Tripler was my first choice. If I don't pass boards, then I will be slated to October. As far as I know, I have a "reservation" in July, it's all a little confusing....Maybe your recruiter was misinformed?? Not sure...

Ugh, so frustrating. Maj. Hairston called me today and we went over the same thing you did. But then again I was told not to talk to a enlisted recruiter and thats who I had. So who knows.

Yeah that does stink. My recruiter was specifically AMEDD. Maybe that was the difference? At least you are still going in July though, right? Ft. Hood won't be so bad...its an hour from Austin, which is supposed to be a fun city. And they say it's more about the people you work with anyway. Also, my recruiter told me that once you are at OBC, if you can find someone to switch duty stations with you, the Army will approve it. So there's always that, just in case. I personally know someone who did that.

Are you doing the internship program for new grads?

:nurse: -Erica

I guess I am doing the internship, I was under the impression all 2Lt.'s had to. My recruiter was strictly AMEDD as well. Oh well nothing to complain about really, I am just super pumped. Anyone reading this and have recently been through OBC feel free to give some advice!

I'm also attending July OBC, I found out today. I have my RFO just waiting on the official orders now so I can make my transportation appointments to ship household goods, etc. I'll also be stationed at Ft Hood after OBC. I have been there before when my husband was stationed there, it's not too bad. It's all what you make of it.

As far as Tripler, my husband has been stationed here in Hawaii for 6 years so we're really familiar with TAMC. I did most of my rotations there while in school. I was very impressed with the hospital and the staff. Hawaii has its ups and downs, namely the traffic and crowded housing conditions. But I love Tripler. I asked to be stationed there since my husband is stationed in HI still but I got Ft Hood instead. Welcome to the Army. :)

Speaking of RFO I cant access mine for some reason. The page never opens, I got an e-mail from HRC saying to click on a link and it will not open anything. It says blocked. Am I doing something wrong? By the way its nice to hear of another Fort Hooder, you have been the first person on here I have seen get that station.
