Does anyone have any thoughts on JPS for a new grad? It seems internships are hard to come by, as I was informed that they filled their spots back in March! I would like to be in the ER or ICU someday, so does anyone have any advice as to what would be the best route? Should I apply for a med-surg position or maybe PCU for now and then apply for an internship when they are available?

Since JPS is the county hospital, I think that you would be exposed to a wide range of good experiences, different skills, and interesting patient populations. With the slumping job market for new nurses in the DFW area, I would attempt to get into the hospital any way you possibly can. Then, once you are in, go for the area(s) that pique your interest the most. Good luck to you!

I'm a new grad too, and I applied to a few positons at JPS. I got an email like an hour after I submitted my applications saying something like "we do not have any new grad positions please stop applying". I talked to a woman that went to nursing school through the JPS program, and she said they were having a hard time finding all their grads positions. That's scary! I also know someone who got a new grad job at JPS, and this person had the highest GPA in my graduating class. They got some special awards at graduation, that's how I know.
With that said, I'm going to keep trying.

I graduated in May 09 and have worked at JPS for one year. I can honestly say that I really like the JPS health system and this hospital has taught me so much in one year. The diversity in both patient population and condition makes it an excellent learning experience. You will find that many departments will not hire new grads as so many were hired last year. You can apply for both the RNI and RNII positions that are posted. I had applied to a RN II position and was hired. It will depend on if that specific unit manager is wanting to hire a new grad. There is a lot that goes into initial RN training. That being said, call the nurse recruiters and speak with someone to find out if they are hiring new grads. It may save you some time. I am leaving JPS because I am relocating to another part of Texas, but had I not been relocating, I could see myself growing with them for many years to come.
Thanks for the input everyone!
I applied for a position with JPS earlier this week and got an email response that stated, "While your background is impressive, your application will be closed because you do not have the experience we're seeking."
