Johns Hopkins University (JHU) Post-Master's PMHNP Certificate Fall 2023

Published

Hello all!

I'm an FNP and applied to the JHU SON PMHNP Post-Master's PMHNP cert program for Fall 2023. After an intense 10 minute search, I couldn't find any threads started for JHU SON PMHNP Cert Fall 2023 applicants to gather, encourage, console and of course share info.   Let's chat!

Is it possible to work per diem while in this program or only during certain semesters?

Hi city_FNP,

I worked and it was awful and many of my classmates went to part-time. I think the fall semester it's doable just challenging but then it gets tricky with the clinical rotations as that will be your priority. I wouldn't recommend working >20 hrs if you are caring for your family/loved ones while doing this program.

Thanks! Do you know what percentage of clinical can be telemedicine? Also, are there requirements to rotate with an LPC and/or other therapy providers?

Hi WestTXRNtoNP

I am (hopefully) finishing this semester and can say that some of my classmates ONLY had telemed clinicals with this program. 100%! And they are thriving.  It seems that the thing JHU care about like the ANCC is the supervised clinical hours so if you were on the moon, telemed, or in a submarine is fine so long as you were supervised.  Also, your clinical hours must be >51% with a PMHNP and the rest could be with a therapist. They want to ensure that you know the meds and are comfortable with prescribing PRN.

..........but the program provides a list of placements that include remote-only options. Please keep in mind that some of the sites may be outdated.....

@FNPRCPR  I'm in California.  By any chance, do you recall if this list had placements way out here?

Also, once they provide you with this placement list, is it guaranteed placement through JHU?  Or must one still do the legwork to see if the clinic/provider will accept you?

Does JHU provide any guaranteed placement? I know it would be tough outside of Maryland, but if one decides to get licensed in Maryland to get a better chance of placements, does JHU just place the person somewhere without the student having to spend extra time hunting for a placement?

JHUSON PMHNP alum here.  My employer is on the JHU list of placement sites in CA.  We allow students to be 100% remote, hybrid, or in person (based on location).  I was hired when I only had my AGPCNP credential, then I worked part time here while I completed the PMHNP program.

Hey! Looking for an update on anyone who has got in or denied from this program . Looking to apply this Jan.

I cannot confidently recommend this program. The clinical placement process is extremely disorganized, making it difficult for students to navigate and secure appropriate placements.  And for some students who have found placements, the clinical placement team fails with doing the paperwork on their end on time leaving students in limbo. Horrible. All lectures are pre-recorded, resulting in minimal interaction with professors, which makes the learning experience feel impersonal. Additionally, there have been frequent delays in grading, leaving students without timely feedback—a concern that many of my peers have voiced. It often feels like the program is operating on autopilot. Like someone is just enrolling students and collecting money.

While there are aspects I have chosen not to elaborate on, the overall experience has been disappointing. As a previous graduate of a Johns Hopkins program, I had high expectations, but this program falls short. It unfortunately feels more like a diploma mill than the high-quality education one would expect from Hopkins.

If you are considering spending $34,000 out of pocket or going into debt for this program, you should know. Many students have expressed in group discussions, share these same frustrations. Hopkins needs to address these concerns and improve the program to align with the reputation it has. Otherwise, it is just not worth the money. You can struggle and have a poor experience for less money. Not everyone has had issues but this is the reality of many students. It is anxiety provoking you might need therapy after this program LOL. Good luck with the application process and with whatever school you decide to pick in the future.

Wow!  The program is getting worse, unfortunately.  I finished it in 2021.  What happened was that the previous PMHNP director retired - she was excellent.  The new head of the program startedin 2020 and frankly, I think she is kind of lazy.  Hopkins used to actively find all the placements under the previous director.  The new director stopped this.  When students were begging for help, she did nothing.  The previous director even talked to her and was shocked that the new director just didn't want to be bothered.  When I was attending, the lectures were prerecorded, which makes sense for distance learning.  However, we also had ample opportunities for interaction with group virtual sessions as well as the bulletin board and emails.  Office hours were also available for teleconferencing.

I even contacted them last year to say that the practice where I work is happy to precept students and I would be a preceptor, but no response!  LOL

I also contacted them to say we are hiring new grads - no response.

Such a shame to see a good program go downhill.

I'm in the program too and agree with everything that was said.

May I ask where you are working in? It would be nice to add you to the updated preceptor database and possibly talk about new grad opportunities!
