Johns Hopkins Nurse Residency 2021

Published

Hi guys! I know it's pretty early to start applying, but I'm looking for other people that are planning on applying to Johns Hopkins for their Nurse residency in 2021! I started this thread so we can follow each other throughout the process.

I applied generally to the pediatric residency program, and I have an interview this Friday with two units!

I applied to the pediatric nurse residency too in Florida! Is this the program that has interviews on January 26 I saw? Are you from Florida?

I didn’t know that they had a Florida campus. I interviewed for Baltimore. We had interviews last Friday and we find out between this Wed-Sat if we got the position.

They do in Saint Petersburg! I’m nervous for it and have no clue how many applied and how many they accept. I hope you get the position!!

Hi all! I’ve accepted a job in the MPCU and start next week. I’ll be moving into the city some time within the year, so if anyone on here is looking for a female roommate feel free to reach out ?

Any advise for those of you who went through the process? I’m eager to apply when the time is right for me, but I’m so scared of how competitive everything is!

What were interviews like?

I interviewed for the pediatrics new grad residency - and it was their first hiring event since COVID so it was a bit stressful doing this over zoom.

Initially, I got an email saying that I was invited for an interview and I was sent a list of all of the hiring units and asked to fill out a doodle pool with the top 3 units I'd like to interview with. I was also asked what times work best for me on the day they were conducting interviews. I selected my top 3 choices for a unit and submitted.

After a few days, I was then sent an email of the units I'd be interviewing with and what times they were at. There were also opportunities to speak with current nurses on the unit as a sort of "tour". I'd HIGHLY recommend that you'd attend these - as I saw the nurses taking notes of the questions we were asking and our responses to questions.

So on the day of the interview, I entered the zoom call and there were about 10 other people interviewing at that time slot as well. We were shown an introductory welcome video and then were split off into break out rooms to meet with the managers of the units. Some of my interview questions were: where do you see yourself in 5 years? Tell me about a time where you made a mistake and how you progressed? What are three things you are looking for in your future organization? Tell me about a time you felt frustrated with a patient or coworker and how you dealt with that? What would someone say is your biggest strength and your biggest weakness? What has been one of the biggest accomplishments in either your personal or professional life?

After 30 minutes, I went to an interview with another unit manager and the same questions were used. After my second interview, I went into another breakout room to speak with some of the nurses on one of the units. After about ~30 min or so, I had a break for an hour and then would log back onto the zoom meeting for another meeting with nurses on a different unit.

After the end of the interviews, we were sent another poll and asked to rank the units we interviewed with. We were also asked if we were interested in a position in the float pool if we were not offered a position on our preferred unit - to which I said yes.

About 1 week after my interview, I was offered a position on my top ranked unit and I start in March!

Nursing, especially pediatrics, can be very competitive but you have to have confidence in yourself and believe that you can do this! I was applying to every job I found and ended up applying to about 100 jobs during my search. My mindset was that the worst thing that could happen is that I don't get the job. I was rejected from about 50 positions (both adult and peds) before being offered several jobs! Some places I never even heard back from. You never know until you try! I'd recommend applying to anything and everything you can.

Hey all! Has anyone who is graduating in May put in an application yet?

I graduate 5/28 but haven’t applied yet. I’m getting really worried because the ATT is super backlogged here in California. When were you planning on applying?

Dmg84, I start at Hopkins on March 1, I am also from CA and the process to get your license endorsed in MD is long because CA doesnt use the Nursys system to verify your license yoy have to write to the BRN in CA and pay the fee to get it verified, the process can take up to three months, just for the verification. Another problem I faced was getting the fingerprinting card for MD to endorse. You have to email them (they werenr answering the phone or letting yoy walk in) and I requested this in late October, I didn't get it in the mail till mid Jan, you cant apply for a license in MD unless you have that because you need the number on it to apply. I would suggest that if Hopkins is where you want to work, get tour license there. I got lucky because of the pandemic, they are allowing you to work with a CA license but that expires in March and they might extend it but no one knows. I applied to the CA BRN in July and got my ATT in late September so it did take a while and CA does not make applying to endorse easy. Plan to be waiting a long time and start early.

Thank you SO much for the guidance!! That is definitely more work than I was aware of. Currently the CA BRN is processing Nov 1-15, and I’m worried I won’t be able to test until August. Add on the time to complete the tasks you’re referring to and goodness I have a lot to do! It is one of my dream hospitals, but you make some great points I will take into consideration. Thank you for the help!!
