Johns Hopkins Entry into Nursing (MSN) Spring 2021

Published

Hi Everyone,

I wanted to start a thread for the Johns Hopkins entry into nursing MSN program for January 2021 applicants. I just started my application this week, aiming to get it in well before the July 1st deadline. Anyone else?? ?

Also, if anyone previously accepted here has any application tips, please do share. Thank you!

This is also my goal too ! I think JHU would be more beneficial for the DNP to be honest because it would be your last degree before finding an NP job. After the program which is almost 2 years you still need at least 1 year RN experience before applying for the 3 year DNP program.

I have been following a lot of nurses posts and nurses that I have met in my Healthcare career and they always say it doesn't matter where you go, in the end, you are a RN. I know that I can be an RN with half the costs and be just as good as those who graduate from JHU. It's just the name that really intrigues me tbh. I know that JHU has a huge presence in the Healthcare field so it makes sense that I would want to attend there just for the experience. I think you'll be fine wherever you go ?

There are a lots of different ideas and opinions.  Hopefully, one is not picking JHU solely because of the name.

Yes, it probably does matter in the grand scheme of things where you go to school, especially after you have a few years of experience.  If cost is really a big issue, then maybe a local community college is a better option since the cost, who out living expenses, is around $5000.

It's possible to get a management job with a direct entry MSN degree.  Highly unlikely since quite a few people will have no floor time experience.  Thus, how can you really manage you don't fully understand.  There are people with floor or health experience from something other than nursing.

Realize, when you graduate, you're still going to be green as a blade of grass.  You may have a bit more education, but not much difference from someone with a BSN or ADN.  The name on the degree will probably get you an interview and maybe towards the top selections.

Later on, after some experience, the MSN and the JHU name will probably help you get those management positions.  If you want to go into teaching, you're probably going to need a MSN or higher; plus some experience.

As for DNP program, most people work a year or two.  It is possible to go directly the the DNP program.  I think the critical care DNP requires at least one year of experience as an RN, maybe critical care.  The nice thing about JHU in regards the DNP, you can transfer up to 16 units of your MSN work towards the DNP; I think you have to start within five years of graduation.  The first year is a lot of classroom work.  Thus, you could possible work part time while in the DNP program.  It's possible to save some money or keep the cost down.

Hey everyone, I'm wondering if someone can explain to me the process of becoming an NP after completion of the program. I'm having a hard time finding a simple answer to this. Thanks!

Hi all!

For the Sources of Contacts where it says indicate what influenced you the most to apply to the JHU? did you respond to this in an essay format?

Same for the COVID-19 Impact, where it says describe how COVID-19 has impacted your pathway to nursing school? is an essay response necessary?

I believe the COVID-19 Impact one is optional but both of these look like mini-essay questions to me.

Looking forward to your feedback!

When will we hear if we got off waitlisting or not for Spring 21?

Thank you!  It's so stressful and I'm already bracing myself for defeat ?

Don't give up! I think a lot of people might decline because the program is not cheap. Have hope ?

Do you also happen to know if they provide a generous financial package? I know some top schools do and I’m hoping JHU does too ?

I received a $20,000 scholarship for some

nursing leadership. I heard some people get more or less, but I don’t know the criteria because my GPA isn't the highest ~3.5.
