Johns Hopkins BSN/MSN 2009 Applicants!

Published

Hey! I am starting to apply for the traditional BSN/MSN program at Johns Hopkins, and I was wondering if anyone else is out there freaking out about their applications!

Holler back! :nurse:

Fionagurl,

Sorry to hear your bad news. Let us know how it goes with the appeal.

I'm still waiting to hear.

Just wanted to pop in an offer a bit of guidance as a current JHUSON student. A few folks had asked me recently via PM how I successfully petitioned for reconsideration after I had been denied by JHU last spring. My only advice (as to what seemingly may have worked for me), is to write a brief, sincere statement outlining perhaps in a bit more detail why you feel you will be successful throughout the program.

In my case, I knew what criteria weakened my application (a few previous undergrad grades) so I was able to target that situation and describe what happened at that point in my undergrad career and how I was willing to tackle the academic challenges that JHUSON would present to me. As you may know, the length restrictions of the essay questions made it difficult to describe how an applicant has improved if they have weaknesses present on their application.

I didn't contact the office to ask for an evaluation of my application to find out specifically why I was denied (as I stated, I had already knew). I sent my letter directly to Mary O'Rourke (in email and both hard copy formats). She sent me a reply indicating she would present this new information to the committee and I waited approximately one week to receive the new decision.

When I submitted this, I truly believed it was a long shot. However, during the application cycle in 2006 another poster on AN had done it and posted of her success as well. I wish the best to all of you, and would say that it definitely doesn't hurt to ask to be reconsidered, so if you feel JHU is the right fit for you, definitely give it a shot.

Good luck!

I have heard from a couple of people that there are a lot of type A personalities, but I don't know that that necessarily means that people aren't helpful. I have also heard that overall, the students at the SON are all pretty cool (from a student who just finished her first semester). I am definitely not type a, but I am competitive with myself and always want to do the best, but I also enjoy studying with other people and helping each other out. I don't know much about Jefferson, but I am sure that you will find a good balance of people at any school.

I hope I didn't offend anyone type A people are very nice and usually good study buddies. I too am competitive with myself. I am excited to be at a high caliber school where I will be really pushed. I was figuring that with JHU's dedication to diversity that the student population would be diverse as well. I am encouraged to hear that others are thinking about it as well.

: ) I am so excited by the opportunity to got to Hopkins. Congrats to us all!

I am trying to decide between JHU and University of Rochester...both are accelerated masters, does anyone have any feedback they can give? Thanks!

I was just wondering... I was accepted to U of Rochester too. Was your interview very strange? I felt like I was listening to an commercial for nursing and the nursing school. They only asked me two questions ( about undergrad GPA and major) and then told me it shouldn't be a problem. It totally weirded me out. Hopefully i was the only one who thought it was strange. I am interested to hear about your experience with U or Rochester. Unfortunately I don't know much about the school; I didn't visit. Good luck with your decision. : )

Does anyone know the last day they are making phone calls/sending out letters for the Accelerated BSN program at JHU??

Thanks! :)

Pianitra - is your question about the interview in regards to rochester? I felt the exact opposite with mine - I spoke with jane tuttle from the FNP program and she was very informative -- definitately said things that got me excited about the program. She didn't ask a ton of specific questions, but was great in answering any of my questions and providing info. I have heard great things about the school.

Glad to hear your experience was a good one. I can see why it would be a hard decision to make. Its nice to have choices. Good luck with figuring it out. I am trying to do my own weighing and deciding. : )

sorry to hear about the news, I was hoping you wouldnt join my boat. submit that as soon as you can. at least you have plenty of other schools to choose from. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you.

just out of curiosity, did anyone apply to the academic merit scholarship BSN/MSN?

that's awesome, allison! congratulations, you're going to be a great nurse! :)

unfortunately, i got my rejection letter yesterday. i'm currently in the process of contacting mary o'rourke to review my application, and submit a letter of reconsideration. i hope it goes well, but if not, i plan to accept the decision and move on.

congratulations to all of those accepted, and best of luck to us who got denied and are still trying!

Lauren,

I'm so sorry to hear that about Hopkins. I think you have a good chance with your letter of reconsideration because you are definitely an exceptional canidate. Keep me updated on the rest of the schools as you hear back. I know it will all work out for you!

Hang in there those of you still waiting to hear. I just got my acceptance call this morning. I'm so happy!

They told me at my interview that they'd notify me by the end of Jan or beginning Feb at the latest, so don't give up hope yet.

Sorry to those who didn't get in, but keep trying. You'll get there for sure.

Congrats Allison, I can imagine what a relief you must feel!!!

Okay, so my turn this time. Just in case I get denied---again (sigh!)---I want to be prepared for the next round. So just wondering, you can PM me this if you want, but I think my box is full. Blah.

Is this your 1st time applying? What do u think u did differently to get in, how did u stand out? What was your GPA (if you dont mind)/ experience? Any other tips, for us--esp those who might need to try again?

Thanks :-)

Hi everyone! glad to see im not the only one biting my nails at this point.

I am also awaiting my acceptance letter for the Accelerated BSN. Im a little confused about the thread, tho....are we talking bsn/msn separately from the bsn second degree accelerated?

Has anyone else gotten a call/letter? This is excruciating?!? Im starting to loose sleep. That just proves to myself how much i want to go to JHUSON. Good luck to all!!
