Jobless LVN/LPN and Depression

Published

Is anyone experiencing the same? I graduated in 2009. Passed NCLEX, worked LVN Corrections-Psych for 1+yrs until 70 of us Registry LVNs had the ahem DMH "contract end" or should I say lay off. I was laid off 1st wave right before Christmas 2011 and that quickly sucked me into depression. Since then, I've been jobless.

I've done a lot to look for a job, wasted a lot of time, gas, mileage, envelopes, stamps, resume paper, pen ink, printer ink etc.. My buttocks hurt from also job hunting through the internet. I had several interviews that were excellent, but no jobs offered. Tons of reject letters-emails. I even tried to look for a CNA and Medical Assisting job (I have certs for both) and still no luck.

I've been in non-nursing healthcare 1999-2008 when I quit for LVN school and now even find a regular healthcare job. Is it because I'm now LVN? All of this rejection is even sinking me even MORE into depression.

It's Friday again. Another week wasted. I give up on looking for a job for this week. Next week I am going to attempt to look for a retail-restaurant-office-admin job and omit any medical experience and schooling. Will only keep my college info under education. I know its falsifying a regular job application but it's worth a shot. Don't tell me you need 1+ yrs experience to fold clothes-stock at any retail store or to mop the floors at McDonalds!!! Will also try again with non-nursing healthcare and omit any LVN experience and schooling... I'm in desperate need for a job. I'm losing hope, my self esteem, very depressed(no meds), and utilizing my coping skills to the max. Psych nursing HI/SI. I admit SI lately because of how I'm feeling. Is anyone else on my boat??

Have you tried Home Health? They have older pts as well as special needs. I've worked with special children and adults most of my life, even after becoming an LPN in 2004. I know that area of work is everyone but it's worth a try to see if you do like it plus usually pays well. I'm in Indiana so may be a different elsewhere. The hospitals in my area are phasing out LPNs and going straight to BSNs...which sucks!

@GlennaLPN *hugs* to you too.. My VN program $42,000 =/

oh my word. where is this? I just recently graduated and I believe my schooling was like 4,000.

Keep your chin up and definitely go talk to someone about how you are feeling. I just recently got a job after graduating in May and I can definitely see how sitting at home, constantly applying for jobs and not getting any calls can be very depressing.

It's sad, but it seems like you are living in a really economically depressed region of the country also. Where I live (N. Virginia area) there are a lot of jobs and if you had the experience you say you have, you would be working.

Any chance you can relocate? I know its easier said that done, but sometimes we have to move to find work. It's a sad reality right now in this country. This area can be expensive, but it's also easy to find roommates, ppl to share with until you get on your feet.

Also, pls get help for yourself, counseling, meds, whatever it takes to feel better. You just can't turn in on yourself due to circumstances that are out of your control.

Hugs and Blessings to you.

MissMedic- I just wanted to offer ((hugs)). It sounds like you are a Christian, as I am also. In the past I suffered from SI, also. God delivered me from that several years ago. BUT, for the last year I've been really fighting depression (my husband left me and 3 kids while I wasn't working and I just haven't been able to "fix" my life, yet)A few weeks ago, I sought professional help for the first time. Indeed, I thank God for my psychologist and the medicine she prescribed. God is able to give us help in many forms. HTH!

Have you tried homehealth? There is always needs for LVN in Homehealth. You can do it at a temporary basis while you look for something else. It doesn't pay much, but it pays the bills. Good luck!

Have you tried Vitas? I'm not sure where in California you live, but Vitas is in CA, they are hiring a lot. If you do not mind hospice. Also I got my first nursing jobs in San Diego, at a hospital (sub-acute unit)) and another ALF. Sometimes the best way is to call or go to the facility themselves and ask to speak to someone in charge of hiring. Feel better! :) Best of luck!

I'm from FL and I just got my license. I been looking for a job since July but no one calls me. I paid $19,000 for my LPN and I'm planning to start the bridge program in November, that will cost me $26,000 more.. I'm getting a little depress about not being able to find a job. Good luck
