Job prospects after TPPP year, Adelaide

Published

Hi everyone!

Can anyone tell me what the current situation is like for graduates looking for permanent employment on completion of their grad year? I'm about to move to Adelaide from NZ having been offered a TPPP place at Flinders but its only a 12 month contract. Since I'm packing up my whole life (and my son's) to move across the ditch, I'm now starting to worry about my chances of securing a job when my contract expires. Don't get me wrong, I feel really lucky to have a new grad offer and am really happy to be coming to Adelaide as everyone tells me its a beautiful city. I can't help worrying though!! Any opinions or advice welcomed :)

I had to move to WA to get experience as I couldn't get a GNP or TPPP. That was with the financial meltdown though. The economy is great here now, we are very strong at the mo.

Most people are taken on by the hospital they finish at after their GNP, so I wouldn't worry too much. If not, then there are like 300 nursing agencies here who would be happy to have you. You will get work, don't worry. Don't forget there are many other hsoptials in Adelaide who are always hiring such as the Royal Adelaide Hospital (RAH), Lyell McEwin, Noarlunga and The QEH, to name a few.

I'd get your skates on working at FMC. It's huge and very, very hectic. The ED is a nightmare apparently & it's been overloaded lately.

Search here for accommodation:

www.realestate.com.au

Also ask FMC if they can help you with accommodation and if u have to do some units thru Flinders Uni, they have cheap accommodation there as well:

www.flinders.edu.au

Good luck, let us know how u get on.

Hi there, thanks for your comments. I guess if FMC can't offer anything permanent it will be a case of being proactive and applying to all the other hospitals around the city as you say. ED sounds full-on for a newbie! I'm going to short stay and theatres, looking forward to it :)

We may be looking at doing a second Grad year here specialising in Rural and Remote but it won't be for the faint hearted!!

How's Mt Isa? I have been toying with the idea of taking on a contract up there. Would be great experience for a nurse in any specialty, I guess and for anyone to experience real Australia.

Many of my patients that have been there comment on how hot it is, most people that have been there, have enjoyed visiting.

how hard is rural nursing?
