Job posting- "Must not be overweight"

Published

I was looking at a job posting looking that was looking for a PDN for a quad. The person posting the ad said " Must not be overweight".

Um... define overweight? :uhoh3:

Well that disqualifies me and a bunch of other nurses, geesh.

i also forgot to mention this in my last post. the person placing the ad appeared (from the pics on his website) to be a quadriplegic. i'm sure he's been faced with a lot of discrimination in his life..so i wonder why he would go out of his way & discriminate against such a large group of people?

:lol2::lol2:!! oh the irony... lol. i'm sorry. i mean no offense, i have a few extra pounds myself, this just struck me as hilarious.

I don't see anything wrong with the patient hiring a nurse he finds attractive if he isn't verbally, or otherwise, inappropriate. As has been said, obesity/overweight is not a protected class.

What difference does my weight make if I can provide appropiate patient care???????????????????????????????????????????????????/

Well, if it's someone paying out of their pocket for private duty care, the difference is a job :)

True!!! But that has nothing to do with the level of patient care!

A) Someone looking for a PDN can choose whomever they want, based on whatever the want. That said, flat out posting it on the job listing is pretty lame, but it still probably gets the point across.

B) Anyone else that has worked in flight nursing like myself knows weight requirements do exist in mainstream nursing. Some people just might not realize it.

I agree- but with the op, that's the set up- a Craigslist ad for a nurse who isn't overweight. :)

Nothing was said about "attractive", the issue was the BMI per the OP.

Which brings up another issue. Why does one assume that "normal" BMI = attractive.

You are right. I extrapolated that the would be employer was looking for a body type he found attractive. It sounds like he is looking for companionship he is missing. However, that may not be his rationale at all. Maybe he just despises fat people for a reasons we could never guess, I don't know. In any event, it is his right and I think is fine under the circumstances. I'm sure regardless of my BMI (which is 22, if it matters) I am far too old for the job. ;)

true, but it has everything to do with what the pt/client wants.

When I see:

Craig's list

BMI/age requirements

Private Duty Nurse

Why do think that this has very little to do with actual nursing, quadraplegia not withstanding?

i'm sure it'd have very little to do w/nsg, except his need for daily bowel stimulation.
