Job offer please offer advice

I interview for a Baylor position today. I am a new grad LPN and I was offered $16hr at LTC facility. It is a 60 bed facility very clean. I was told there are two sections A & B( 30 pts in A and 30 pts in B)and I would have a 15 patient load and the other nurse would have 15. How would I know if I'm being underpaid or not? Do you think this sounds fair considering I'm new. I met with the DON today, but will meet with the HR manager tomorrow or Monday she will have the final say on if they hire me or not and payscale. The DON had to call to find out the base pay (because the is also new), but it looks very promising. The DON said she is very interested in me. DO you guys know if there is usually a shift diff from 3 to 7 on most Baylor programs? I know each facility have their own policies on pay but should I expect a shift diff from 3 to 7pm. The shift is 7a to 7p sat and sun=32.

Thanks for any responses:p

Seems low to me, but I suppose it depends what part of the country you are in. I think we start our LPN's at around $18 or 19. Good luck in your first job! :) :)

In my area, most new grad LPN's begin at more than $16.00 an hour and even MORE for baylor.

That's why more people want baylor. You are tying yourself into every weekend. Baylor nurses at my facility get between $29 and $32 an hour for every other weekend and could get as much as $36 an hour if you commit to every weekend

I know pay rates vary among the US and I don't know where you are, but I really think you are getting ripped off. Regardless, if you are a new grad or not if you have had experience even as a CNA you should be making more than that.

You might agree to less if you have no experience and are going to be on orientation, but once you are on your own, you need to have more money. Heck, that's almost a CNA pay around here.

Good luck......and don't be afraid to ask for more money. The worst they could do is turn you down and make a counter offer.

I don't live in your area so can't really comment if this is a fair wage. BUT... to add a little humor, I started as a brand new LPN at $5.75/HR. Of course this is still when dirt was being developed :chuckle Good luck on your job search.

Central Mississippi is the location. I don't know of any CNA's in MS making 16hr. I know a couple making 14hr but the have been CNA's since the begining of time. Thanks for the input:)

Not sure on the LPN wages, but the staffing ratio is great....I'd kill for 15 patients! What are your other duties?

I'm not sure, I was told that there are 4 nurses staffed per shift 2med and 2 treatment nurses. I don't know what a TX nurse is ? I do know the day I had my interview it was only 3 nurses(LPNs). I had to wait for the DON and I could hear the staff asking who was going to help her with the treatments since __ _ _ _ was out. I'm sure it's going to be many times when I'll have all 30 patients b/c of a call in(if they hire me). I really feel helpless because I don't know all the detailed questions to ask about working LTC. I guess you live and you learn.

I think you should come to the Northeast to work. (ha ha) We do have alot of pool nurses who come from upstate New York.

Same reason...They could work here in CT 3 days (doing doubles) and take almost the rest of the month off. Pool agencies will pay for their hotel too. Not a bad deal.....

On the flip side, sounds like 15 patients is sub-acute. The average long-term unit here is 30 residents. Sub-acute unit is 15. Not bad if you don't have to do treatments either.

Tough call...I guess you live in one of those areas that $16 is about average. Sorry I couldn't help you out. But $16 here is an insult.

I think $14-16 for a new grad(LPN) is average for Mississippi. I just haven't heard much about Baylor Program pay, As long 16 for Baylor is average for around MY parts I'm happy. The most I've heard a nurse NEW grad(LPN) make is 18 but she works psych(11-7). I don't have an interest moving to the northeast(haha), maybe the west(Cali). Thanks for the input.

Regardless if you're a new grad or not you should still receive a higher wage because it's EVERY weekend (you couldn't pay me enough to work every weekend :chuckle ) & more $$ is the highlight of the program. Ask for more $$ - it can't hurt! Check into some other facilities that offer the Baylor program & compare.

Good luck!

P.S. - Tx is treatment

Thanks, I will ask for more money. Ok.. Tx is treatment what Tx are done in LTC??? I don't mind working weekends, because I'll have all week off. It will all be new to me so I don't mind, 6months from now I may run from the idea, also this will give me time to study for the NET. In the Spring I have 7 hours to complete and must pass the NET by may 31, 2006 to qualify for the bridge program LPN and RN. Maybe having the week off, I can call up my old personal trainer to help me shake off the 1,000lbs I've gained in school.:chuckle
