Job offer, accepted now "new" information regarding position given - feel duped!

Published

I interviewed for a FT position recently..was offered the job and accepted. However, AFTER accepting I was told a few things that were NOT remotely hinted at or told to me during the interview process nor during the initial screening for the position..such as...I will not have a home office though the position was only advertised for the one in the area I live - I am expected to work in one of several offices given the need. I wouldn't have a problem with this except the other 2 are 60-70 miles one way from where I live. The other bit of news is the orientation will take place 90 miles from my home at AND 200 miles from my home at the 2 "headquarters." The orientation length of time (days) time isn't firm..it can be anywhere from a week to 4 months. I cannot afford to drive back and forth nor can I afford to stay somewhere even during the week. Evidently, this traveling is part of the job, which was NOT discussed as is taking call for ALL the facilities with in a 100 mile radius. Had I known all these things I would not have applied, interviewed or accepted. My only other option is a PRN position at another place which could roll into part time at some point but FT would be months away as it's a few place. I spent last night applying like crazy for other jobs but with the job market as it is I felt blessed to have been given this FT opportunity. Even for seasoned nurses its difficult. I did not tell the HR person any of my concerns when I found this out yesterday, because, frankly, unless I can secure something else before the start date I have no choice but to at least begin this position as I resigned from my other part time job to take this one. I can't go back to them now!

I realize now this may be why the position was advertised for so long (several months)..maybe they had other people interview etc then find this out. I feel like I was not given the full scope of the job intentionally. Am I the only one this is happening to? Or is this becoming somewhat of the norm now..apply for jobs..never hear back about application or get an interview only to be told you will hear back if there is going to be a 2nd interview or whatever only to never hear back. I understand employers are having to use resources more wisely given the economic climate however, for the first time as a nurse I am beginning to see the disrespect and herding of nurses that others have complained about. I have no idea what to do. Employers know we have little wiggle room anymore. I think about some of the posts on here - nurses wanting to leave the field. I understand this.

Is there any chance you will be compensated for travel but that is wasn't mentioned? I realize it's entirely possible, but I'm having a hard time understanding how they really think someone will travel those distances without mileage reimbursement. Most companies who are attempting to minimize their travel expenses have at least moved to video conferencing, telecommuting when feasible etc etc.

They sound like a bunch of sheisters. If you can't get your old job back then do what you have to do until you can find another job and then tell them adios with no remorse. I normally would never suggest being paid for orientation and then leaving, but in this case I would do it in a heartbeat.

Surely they are not conducting orientation at headquarters for just one person (you), there must be others - possibly you could share motel expenses with others?

Again, they are shady and this is just the begining of the BS they will expect you to accept. If it's your only option for now to bring in $$ then do it until you find another job or the conditions/expectations become completely intolerable to you. If at any point you feel you are compromising yourself legally or ethically or placing your license in jeopardy then jump ship pronto.

So so wrong what they have done - my very best to you !

I would go to HR and ask them at which hotel they will be putting you up, and can they please give you gas cards, as voucher reimbursement will not work for you at this time. The 2011 fedeal mileage rate is 0.48, so figure out what it is going to be and let them know so they can give you the correct amount in advance.

Good luck with that. I'm betting if they intended to pay for lodging and gas, they would have put everything on the table up front. The fact that they are misleading now would lead me to think this is just the beginning. If you accept things as they are, they will assume you will accept anything they throw at you. And if later you decide you can't take any more and refuse, then they will either fire you or give you a bad reference.

And the comment about short-term jobs not having to be put on an application may be true, but I know a couple of other DONs who, if they find out the application is short on information (gossip is a witch) will file a formal complaint with the nursing board (Not that it affects your license, but a complaint filed with the board draws unwanted attention that might impact a future issue). I know that is not the norm, but you never know when you will run into someone like them.... And even if you don't run into ladies as pleasant as these two, and the new job finds out about the exclusion (however), it might make them wonder why you left it off.

This is really a no-win situation. If it weren't for the obvious need for a job and a paycheck, I'd tell you to tuck tail and run...

Thanks for all the replies..I must say I was shocked to read this is happening to others..I thought maybe it was just this particular place. I still don't know what I am going to do..have another interview for a part time job this a.m. and did leave a message for my former employer. I was honest with her in the message. So..hopefully today some of this will settle out. Dialysis was going to be a new venture for me but not after this...

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

I answered you in the dialysis forum but will put it here too:

1. Dialysis companies usually train at one central place - is the long commute for the training which is usually 3 straight weeks then one -two days/week for another month or so?

2. Are you being hired as float staff? Would be leery of this as this is usually offered to a very experienced dialysis nurse, not a newbie.

3. Are there openings now or projected openings at a closer dialysis unit?

Specializes in NICU, Post-partum.

Unless you are desparate, I would turn the job down. To me, those were KEY factors in salary negotiation which they withheld.

If they have to hide facts in order to get you to accept, not a company I would want to work for.

Good luck to you! I wish you well!

I called the hiring person and declined the position. I was honest..told her much of what she informed me of was after the fact of being hired and had I known I would not have applied/interviewed to begin with, etc., that I didn't have the money to be getting a hotel for 12 weeks or the money for gas back and forth if I chose to drive the 160 miles/day/everyday (no reimbursement). This position was a home therapies position. She had literally no response. Just said "ok" and that was it. I contacted my former employer who said she would be happy to have me return and had not yet completed my resignation paperwork so I am more relieved for sure. I am wiser for all this now that's for sure..This company is Fresenius.

Specializes in PICU, ICU, Hospice, Mgmt, DON.
