If you have worked for a facility that you do not want a prospective employer to contact.. how do you list this on resume? Also how would anyone recommend I deal with the fact I have moved several times and therefore have more employment but not want to be seen a job-hopper?? All suggestions appreciated.

I know what you mean by moving. I was prior military (employers seem to overlook that) so I have multiple moves. It looks bad too..as you said "job hopping". Though it was far from it. Navy medicine is all I've now, and only place I've worked, and that's all Im able to put on my resume. as for not wanting an employer to be contacted, kinda tricky...you can omit the job on the resume..or place it but when asked about contacting them..and you say...prefer not...it makes you look like you're hiding something. so, if you have nothing to hide, and you just don't like the employer, so be it, let the new one contact them and do damage control later..if needed. We're nurses..our brains work good under pressure, and when on the spot...we can spit out anything!!!

They don't contact, until after the interview. So you can either do what I used to do, don't put it. But my last position I needed them for the added experience in that particular specialty. ( they trained me). My interviewer asked me, if they could contact them. I said no. When I filled out the application, I checked no, you may not call. Once employed, HR asked me for a supervisor name, at the "no" facility. I asked her to please not call. She said, she had too, but not to worry, they only give dates and whether they would rehire. She then said, any HR worth her salt, would not give a bad reference for fear of reprisal. I never did ask her what was said, but will ask her tomorrow. Obviously, it did nothing to hurt my career.

Ps- I Know for a fact they hated me. Maybe they were just glad, I was gone. Peace!

I need this for work experience but they fired me just prior to vacation and they basically knew I was going to move.. NM said she was "made" to do it and would give good reference.. After a few great interviews and then no offer. I had a friend who was an HR person (unrelated business) do a reference check and found out they were telling it all. I even called NM (supposed friend) to check out what was up.. and she was so nasty...No getting fired without cause allowed me to get unemployment and eventually find job. But I had to resign last yr to care for both parents who were terminal. That job NM got angry that I was resigning even with notice and says I can re-apply as "they trained me" but I have applied 3 x with no response so obviously not going to get to go back.. And now job prior to move is coming back into play!?????

Yes usually i can talk circles are their "job Hopping" issues and most look at it as great experiences not too many jobs.. But that is when I get interviews.. No telling what they thing when I get no response.

But one thing is every insurance company in the country has contacted me about selling insurance for them.. seems old nurses don't die they go on to sell insurance!!!

To avoid the appearance of job hopping, instead of putting the month and year of you employment, you can simply put the year. For example, if you worked at Mercy Hospital from January - May 2010, County General Hospital from June -September 2010, and Memorial General Hospital from September - December 2010,

instead of writing on your resume

Mercy Hospital January - May 2010

County General Hospital June -September 2010

Memorial General Hospital from September - December 2010

You can simply write

Memorial General Hospital 2010

Then you can give them the contact information for that hospital since you may have good references there. Also, it prevents the employer from wondering why you had (for example's sake) three jobs in a year. I think it is a neat way of skirting a delicate issue, because you can't really sufficiently explain it on paper with credibility (in many circumstances, anyway), so it's just best to give yourself the chance to explain it in person up front.

Hope that helps!

I do not put may contact/don't contact info on the resume, that info goes on the application. Furthemore some of them contact in spite of your instructions. I just try to be prepared for anything negative that might come up.

Since most jobs are online, applications goes hand and hand with resume. so still an issue. If they contact, will never get chance to explain anything.

That is the chance one takes. It never occurred to me that they would contact despite me checking the "do not contact" box until I read about that practice. And I got a rude awakening when I was told by a prospective employer that the manager who had promised me a good reference was, in fact, seeing that I would never be hired. Had that person not told me, I might have never known why I wasn't being hired by anyone. Besides taking legal action, I stopped using that person as a reference. That is what I mean by being prepared for the worst.
