I worked 20 hours/week during my full-time BSN program, so it is possible. I know people who worked 40 hours/week as well. You could get your CNA or work as a nurse tech. Or you can do what I did to pay the bills when those positions were non-existent; work in retail.... not very glamorous but I received a paycheck every week.
Personally right now I am waitressing while in school full-time. I was working full-time and taking classes but it was just too much. There's only one hospital (and one chain of clinics) in the town where I'm living and going to school, and we're about 2 hours from the next town with a hospital, so I haven't been able to get a job there yet... plus, I like the flexibility at my restaurant -- we're open 24 hours a day so there's always a shift that fits my schedule. :)
Certainly every school is different, but i'd say it's very rare that a student really can't work at least a part time job while in nursing school. Many worked full time jobs while in school where I went (ADN program).
And yes, I'd recommend anything that gives you experience in healthcare -- it will make your classes and clinicals that much easier, as you have seen and experienced more, and can assimilate the new information faster.
Don't let anyone tell you that you *can't* do something... use critical thinking and problem solving to achieve your goals (ie -- start acting like a nurse!).
You can do it. :)
Have you looked around your local hospitals to see if they are hiring patient care techs? Four hospitals in my area hire nursing students (but with at least 1 semester of nursing courses) to work as patient care techs and you can choose between FT, PT or per diem work. The pay is actually pretty good, well at least around me.
For the summer, I have been working in the ER. I was also in Maternity last sem. During school months I work about 10 hours per week. This summer I work about 20-25 hrs/week.
I learned so many things from the nursing and medical staff. I also met and networked with several nurse managers.
