JJC Nursing Program: Fall of 2015

Published

Hi, ya'll! I just thought I would try to connect with any other hopefuls that are going to attempt to be accepted into JJC's Nursing program for Fall of 2015. Was curious as to how you are all feeling about your possibility of being accepted. (I.e teas score, pre-reqs, gpa, etc.)

Hope to meet some new friends to share this journey with! Any other "seasoned" nursing students that read this, care to shed some light on what I should be preparing myself for?

I took it last semester with Dr. Bellas. He's very disorganized, but an excellent professor whose every intention is to help you succeed in his class. :-)

Laurynq16,

Did the advisor give you any other useful info while we wait?

Great, thanks. She didn't really have any more information yet than we already know. She had hoped that by the end of the week they would know at least the number of qualified applicants from the number of applicants that applied. She told me May 5th there will be a big orientation where we register, do uniforms, have tours, etc. I asked about finding a good cardiac stethoscope or something and she said the cheap ones in the bookstore are just fine since they may get lost, broken, etc in clinicals. Said to look into finding a cheap blood pressure cuff.

She told me with my 4.0, all pre-reqs done, and an 81 on my TEAS that she would bet her first born that I am starting in the fall. It made me feel a lot better, but it is still just an opinion. :( Oh! She also said that they go based on rank for who gets their preference in the night program. I want nights so badly, but as long as I get in I"ll figure it out. She said she doesn't have average scores yet, and it's been weird. One week she will have 4 people she meets with all over an 80, and the next week it's 4-5 people all with 50s on their Teas.

All in all, not a whole lot of new information.

Also, she was talking about uniforms. She said that you have to have a barney purple for your tops, but can save a lot of money if you buy a ton of cheap black scrub pants elsewhere and only spend the $$$ on the tops. There ARE lab hours to help with skills if you are struggling, as well as a retention specialist.

Thanks, Laurynq16. Good info to know, little as it may be. And may the ranking system work in our favor! :-)

I'm feeling pretty good about our chances, Monac! :)

Not worries about my chances at getting in so much as I'm worried about my chances at getting in to the night program. (Fingers crossed!)

Yes, I completely agree! Fingers crossed we both make it into evenings together! It would be so awesome to have started our friendship before ever officially meeting in person, and then get to embark upon this journey together! :)

I just thought I would update ya'll once again. I cannot seem to get this Nursing program acceptance/denial off of my mind! So I called the department again today, and Ms. McComb informed me that they now have decided who is qualified and who isn't. She said there was actually 233 that applied, and of those 233 there are 208 qualified. They are now in the review process of narrowing down from there, and emails should go out soon to schedule dates to complete the essay if you need to.

@Monac,

I asked if she knew how many people were in the "guaranteed" category, and if we are going to have to take the essay as well. She said she did not know that number yet, but may if I call back in about a week or so. She said it would be very rare for there to be more students in the qualified category than seats, but she may be able to give us more information on that next week. Obviously, if I call and there are only 43 students "guaranteed", we are good to go. :)

She did mention that last semester the average TEAS score was 73. She thought it may be slightly lower this round, but wasn't sure. I know this isn't a ton of help, guys, but just thought if you were as eager as I am to find all of this out then at least I had SOMETHING new to share. LOL

I got the email saying I am a qualifying candidate. So, now we wait.....

Yes, more waiting. :/ The next email should contain information about scheduling a time to come in and write the essay, if what she told me earlier is correct.

Yes. I called and Kathy said that those with an 80+ TEAS score may get their acceptance emails as early in the next two business days. Let's see...
