Jitters and Questioning My Abilities

I start the ADN program full time in the fall, having already done some pre-req's three years ago. I am starting to get the jitters. I am not questioning my decision to go to school, but I am questioning the logistics of it all and whether or not I can handle it. One day, I am positive I can do it all and the next, I am terrified that my children will suffer or I won't be able to hack it.

There are so many things that make me nervous that I don't know if I can even list them all here...money issues, childcare and the kid's well-being, my abilities, sleep and my health, etc, etc, etc.

Are there others of you out there starting in the fall that are terrified? I always project such confidence, but this is getting to me right now for some reason.

I am going through the same thing. I don't start until January, 2005 but I have some days that I am so scared that I won't be able to handle things. I start thinking about everything, school, my family and then I think of what area I would want to work in. That's what scares me most because I see all of these acronyms and I don't know what they mean. My heart keeps pulling towards pediatrics but I don't know what to expect there. I love children. What I'm concerned about is would I be able to get a job in that area as a new grad? Can anyone help me with understand what the different areas are? Med/Surg/ Pacu? Thanks.

mom of 38,160...holy cow!!! You've been busy if you are the mom of that many kids! LOLOLOLOL!!!! (couldn't resist, sorry!) I would go to those boards on the site to find out information about each specialty area. That would be your best bet! I tried to start a sticky thread for the acronyms and it didn't fly, but there are lots of good sites out there that explain most, if not all, of them.

Thanks. I didn't realize I could do that. Trust me some days I feel like I have 38,160 KIDS!!!!!! I only have 3 but my 75 year old mom lives with me and sometimes its like having another child! And then when my husband comes home. . . . There's number 5! Oh well, the joys of life!!

Hi, everyone, I'm scared, too! :chair: I did fairly well in all my classes up until I took advanced physiology this spring! I had to drop due to academic concerns, and will be taking it later at another school. I had such a hard time, and I sure hope nursing school isn't like that or I should just quit now! I have CNA experience and did well with that, but I'm concerned about all the academic work.

Hang in there...we're all in it with ya! And maybe some more seasoned nurses can tell you about their experience in school?

What am I nervous about:

1) Failing

2) Feeling like the only one that doesn't "get" something

3) My kids not having me around 3-4 days a week, even though they're in school also.

4) Missing out on stuff with my kids, because of late night studying, etc., even though I'm doing that now.

5) Making an idiot out of myself

6) Failing even further

7) Ruining my GPA by failing

8) Going through all of the schooling and not passing a final or NCLEX

9) My long-a$$ commute each day (1+ hour each way)

10) Everything falling to pieces when I'm not here

11) and just about everything else!

:chuckle

I hear ya Whitney...I have everything you do except #9 and only one of my kids will be in school. *sigh* the other thing is really trying to figure out who is going to be where when and finding a sitter for Trey and the others when I have clinicals at night and Bry is working, blah, blah, blah.....I gotta quit thinking about it! LOL!

I think the commute will be the worst for me, since I HATE traffic (I live on a little dirt road, and have to commute to the city) and it's so long. I do have a friend and her hubby and kids that live in the city, and she said if the weather is bad or I don't feel like driving I can stay with them. That was nice of her. I may do it if the weather is bad, but I can't tell my 4 kids I'm not coming home because I'm sick of driving! I may have a mutiny on my hands! :chuckle

I'm lucky that my oldest is 13, and has taken the babysitting "safe sitters" course, and will do it for me. It should only be about 5-6 hours a week total, but I told her I would pay her - only fair, IMO. (Hmmmmm......wonder if I can claim that on my taxes for next year???? LOL) She's great - gets sick of having 3 brothers, but likes being the oldest and "in command"!

I give you a lot of credit - I had to wait until my youngest was 6 and in school before I went back. I had started doing pre-req's before he was born, but I had to wait until he was in school full-time before I continued. it is REALLY hard!

Whitney..I made the decision without even asking most of my family. I just knew that if I didn't do it now, I never would and honestly, I applied to start in the fall of 2005 and they accepted me for this fall! i was shocked and scared, but glad because I had been considering it all along...trying to switch to this fall.

Wow that trip is going to be gruesome sometimes. Good thing you do have friends in the city. Being in New Englad you are likely to get some massive storms, just like we do here....we're right in the snow belt! LOL! I'm so glad that all of us here have each other to help us through!
