Jefferson State Community College Fall 2015 Applicants

U.S.A. Alabama

Published

I wanted to start a thread for all who are planning on applying to the Fall 2015 nursing program. I feel it will be very helpful in the process. I just moved to Alabama in May of last year & was originally going for Physical Therapy (not assistant, actual therapist). Well that has fallen through & I feel led to go the nursing route. I already have a bachelors degree from another college so all my prerequisites are done (just wished I would have done a little better -hince my PT problem). I have signed up for my TEAS test for February 5th so hopefully if I don't get what I want I can retake it in time for the application. I emailed one of the advisors at the Shelby campus & she said the average applicant is at 60% /90pts. When I calculate that up it doesn't seem like much. So my goal is to make around 85% or more, but we shall see. I just know I need to do VERY,VERY well on the TEAS to make up for my grades not being all A's.

How about anyone else, where do you all stand with applying this fall? Are you doing full time, night-weekend? Which campus are you all applying to?

And does anyone know whether Jeff State grads have an ok time finding jobs? I've been told the trend is towards employers preferring BSNs, so I'm a little worried about getting just an ADN. I plan to eventually do a bridge to BSN program, but don't want to get stuck not being able to find a first nursing job. I already have 2 stinkin' degrees that weren't much help in the job dept .

Jeff State nursing grads typically don't have a hard time finding jobs. I graduated from Jeff State as did quite a few of my coworkers. Most hospitals that require a BSN (mine does not) require you to start taking classes toward the BSN within a year of hire. Hope this helps good luck to you:)

Retaking the Teas next week, the 8th. Say a prayer for me. I am really focusing on Math this time because it was the area I did the worst in. So I'm praying to do at least 10% better, if not more. I'm so ready to get this application submitted.

So had to call the school yesterday to find out if they had received my transcripts coming in from another school. After talking to admissions and them not being able to find them I asked them to transfer me to the nursing advisor for I needed to ask her a question. Let me start off by saying that she has been extremely helpful and is very sincere. Every time I have called her she has been exceptional in explaining everything. So she told me she was going to find out why it was taking so long to get my transcripts in and that she would call me back. Later in the day she called me back and told me she found my transcripts and that they had been there but was under my maiden name. I am hoping that the rest of the nursing dept. is just as helpful and caring as she has been.

While I had her on the phone I told her that I would be applying with 200 points and was wondering if that was pretty competitive. She told me that it was a very good score, so hopefully if I don't get into Shelton I will get into here. I have heard Sheltons program is very competitive, for they only have one RN program and it starts in the Fall. They only accept 50 people into their program. I talked to the advisor there and she said that the average number of applicants is about 500.

I thought they had a day and the n/w program? I think you have an awesome score as well. I'm just trying to get some more points to be up there as well. I have to agree that everyone I've encountered has been super nice and patient with all my questions. I just have the faith and confidence that I'm going to be one of the chosen few. We shall see. I'm kinda glad that I'm taking Micro this summer so that I won't be waiting by the computer/mailbox. I'm already getting anxious!

Has anyone been able to talk to an advisor? I just wanted to make sure I have everything but my TEAS scores done. Who would I talk to about that?

Hey Tara1986, I would talk to the nursing advisor. I went and saw her and she looked over everything to make sure everything was in the system. They had not evaluated my transcripts at that point so she walked over to the person that does that and asked him to go ahead and evaluate them. By the time I left everything was in the system. I would give you her name but they won't allow you to post names on here. She was very helpful and sincere. If you are taking your Teas somewhere other than Jeff State, you will want to call and make sure they receive them. I had to have mine sent twice.

I took my Teas at Jeff Stare and they received my official scores very quickly. The advisor will definitely answer all questions. Super duper nice.

So...all applications in??? I mailed mine Thursday so fingers crossed and prayers up that every thing is in order and that I did well enough to get in.

Anyone happen to know how many people they accept each semester? ?

I don't really know how many they accept. Yes, mine was mailed two weeks ago. I am just trying to make sure all of my transcripts are in right now. The records office didn't do anything on Friday due to graduation. So I'm going to stay on top of them. They said it doesn't take long to get them uploaded. Yes, now the waiting game starts!

Hey guys! I'm applying for the full time program too :) I decided to retake the TEAS on May 11th and turned in my app on the 12th. I can't wait to hear back!!!

@kwootten14, I'm so nervous. I was told that it will around the mid or end of June before we hear anything. I was hoping it would only be four weeks at the most.

I am so nervous. The suspense of waiting is killing me. I applied for the full time program at the Pell City campus. Fingers crossed
