Hey! I thought I would start a thread for all the people that are applying for summer admittance into jeff state so we could get to know our possible future classmates. They're accepting 50 on each campus and with the compass completely gone, and the teas v being solely relied on plus course points of course, I think this will make for a INTERESTING admission process to say the least! Any input and comments are welcomed;-)
Ikr! I was gonna try to go to Lawson nursing program but I can't even get a straight answer on changes! And for someone to tell you " no I won't tell you about the changes because you should have been there" that's a insult! Don't they realize WE AS STUDENTS keep them employed! That why mo offense I rather go and deal with te white people at jeff state. Not trying to make it into a racial issue but whenever black people are in charge they dont know how to act. I guess you can say they just don't know how to handle power smh. And I'm black! So u know that's sad I feel that way! If I fail out I dot want to question the administration which at Lawson I feel like I would be doing constantly. Their sheer unorganization about requirements to get IN TO the program- that should let you know how the program is ran- UNORGANIZED!!
I just found out that they are on probation, and might possibly lose their accred. I'm going to have a heart to heart with the hubs about the job situation, and may just apply to Jeff State. I really do hate Lawson. I wonder if there are any PCT jobs that will hire me without a CNA and my first clinical done though. I heard that Jeff St. is really good about job placement, especially at St. Vincent's. At Lawson, they stick help wanted ads in a bin somewhere. Their career fairs never feature UAB, St. Vincents, or Children's....my 3 major choices in employment. I'm just praying I hear back on the internship at Children's. (Which I think you said you applied to also.)
Girl I told u!! My pre req teachers (who teach at Lawson) basically all but said the exact words GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! the biology department at Lawson is wonderful but that nursing is horrific! And it used to be where is was just the Birmingham campus tha had problems but now the same things being said about the Birmingham campus is being said about the Bessemer campus. And I didn't know jeff state helps with job placement! That's terrific! I'm a little less worried about finding a rn job now when I get out!
I'm going to Jeff state to talk to the lady Tuesday. I didn't know if you had to have the clinical semester before they gave you the CNA or not. (the part-time program doesn't begin clinicals until the 2nd semester.) I'll keep Lawson as a back-up if I don't do good on the TEAS V in a few weeks. Since they have the whole partnership with St. Vincent's it should be easier to get a job there, I hope. I also emailed the lady about the internship, so I'm hoping to hear back from her soon. Thanks and Good luck!
If u wanted to just do a cna class.. I took mine at Lawson. Excellent short certificate class. It's basically fundamentals of nursing! When looking at the table of contents of my fundamentals book, I discovered out of the 50+ subjects we would be covering, I had already learned about 40 of the skills. The only ones I haven't learned was stuff like starting iv's and pushing meds, ect... Basically anything outside of the cna scope of practice. You could take that this summer, along with that health profession class if u decide you have no other choice than Lawson. Its like a 5 -6 week class and the teacher mrs. Late is stern but I will say when I went on a interview for st. Vincents and was asked about what all I learned and I told them they were shock. They were floored when I mentioned scope of practice!

I'm taking the TEAS V ahead of time, in case I bomb for some reason. You have to wait 6 weeks to retake. I want to apply to both, to double my chances, and that would mean I take the HPS 103 class. The thing that worries me is that I might hear back from Jeff State, and have to wait on Lawson's slooowww nursing people to let me know if I got in to know whether or not to take it. Time is a big problem with me...I can only do classes after 3:30. I need to get back to work (or risk foreclosure), and at Jeff State's night program, you don't start your clinical classes until the 2nd semester. I can get a job after the first clinical semester, and I just can't wait that long. I absolutely hate Lawson though. I got A's in the science classes, but almost everyone dropped after the first few tests. I couldn't go to the meeting the nursing people had, because they had it in the middle of the day, and they didn't TELL PEOPLE. I went to the nursing dept. and by a miracle someone was ACTUALLY THERE, and she told me she wouldn't tell me about it becuase I should have been there, and they cancelled the other meetings. They are so unorganized, and people are dropping left and right from frustration. Their labs are a joke at Lawson too. If I thought I could get a job around Christmas, I would go to Jeff st. in a heartbeat.
