Jeff State Summer 2009 Hopefuls

U.S.A. Alabama

Hey guys!

Since the spring applicants are recieving acceptance letters, I thought it would be about time to make a Summer '09 thread so we can all get to know each other and hopefully have some friends before school starts. Maybe we should tell a little about ourselves?

Starting in the Summer scares me(it's so much work!), but it's really my only option. I'm very very dedicated and I will do everything I can to make sure I'm successful in my courses. I don't have a job or a family to take care of so hopefully I'll be able to studystudystudy! I won't be taking any classes in the Spring because I'll have all my points(200, if I can pass math with an A or a B) so I'm going to volunteer my time with TEARS... it's an animal rescue and rehabilitation nonprofit company.

I am so excited to start nursing school!

Specializes in MICU, SICU, CRRT,.

No clinicals there isnt a choice. You go where they tell you to..and if you complain they tell you to get over it (although all schools are like that to my understanding). However, your last semester, when you do your preceptor, you do have a choice, and you pretty much get one of your top three choices. I was in SICU at Brookwood, and will start my first job inthe medical ICU there monday. CLinicals are sporadic..you have a lot of med surg in sylacauga and alex city, ICU in st vincents and anniston, psych at hillcrest and brookwood, peds at childrens and maybe some in alex city, ER at sylacauga, OB at sylacauga or brookwood and maybe shely or talledega ( all these sites depend on what instructor you have for that clinical an where they can fit you)..clinicals usually average out to be 1-2 a week, and sometimes none a week, and depending on the semester you may have class 1-3 days a week.It is hectic, but so very worth it. 190 points is great! I dont really know what they cutoff is, but i know i made A's and B's in my basic classes, a 99 on my compass test, and i had a 2.57 GPA when i applied to the program (would have been better, but after i didnt not officially withdraw from montevallo years ago, i went into my basics with a 1.3 because i had taken F's in all my classesthat semester. Have you already applied to CACC???

Ugh! I can't believe this is going on! When is orientation supposed to be? I read on the 2009 Spring thread that one semester they ended up having to call people because letters were so late? I'm really impatient - I can't wait until April! :(

I totally agree. I find it a little ridiculous that they always have this issue getting letters out at JS.

No, I have not applied to CACC yet. I applied to JS for last fall and did not get in. I at that time had 180 pts, a BS from UAB, a 3.4 gpa and a 99 on compass. So I am re-taking bio 103 to get a A to get my pts up to 190. If that does not work and get me in JS for this fall, I will use CACC for my backup.

Magnolia, did you look into UAB's second degree program?

I don't know about you guys, but I personally am sick of the waiting game!

Yeah... I know what you mean... The waiting is killing me.... I am worried that my points may be borderline in order to get into the program b/c there are so many ppl applying who have points in the high 190's....

I have a 194 with a 3.87 gpa. I feel good about it, but it's the not knowing for sure that is killing me! What do you have?

bfeemster

Yes, I did look into UAB's 2nd degree program. Looked at PA school too. at this time decided against it mostly because of cost and the fact that I have to work while I am in school. Also, 5 semesters and you can practice in a decent paying job is attractvie...then I can work at UAB and go to UAB for masters and let them pay for it. You can do nurse Masters work more part time. Another reason...I honestly did not think I would not get into JS! So After re-taking bio 103 if I still do not get in, and I decide against CACC...UAB, here I come...as well as bank here I come for a big fat loan!

I started out at JSCC and graduated from here last spring with an associates in criminal justice. I went to UAB this past fall to get my BSN. Long story short, I have a husband and 2 kids and cannot do the clinical and class schedules that they have. Also, I hated the long drive EVERY day (I live in Springville). I later found out that I could be in and out of school a lot faster and get paid the same if I went to JS. So I was just wondering if you knew about it. But I am with you about the cost! UAB is ridiculously expensive! $100 just for a hang tag!

I applied to the Jefferson Campus and my points total to 186... I know the cut off has never been that high, but I'm really nervous b/c every semester the cut off is higher so it seems....

Hopefully, we will all get in!

Yes!! Hopefully all the hard work will pay off..... Just in time for more hard work..lol :D
