January OBLC

Published

Is there anyone going to the January Army OBLC in San Antonio? I just got my orders I will be there!! I am not thrilled about my duty station but I am going to make the best out of it.

Hey Nursy2008

I'm also awaiting orders and supposed to be going to OBLC 2011. My MAJ called me the other day and seems to be having the same problems. I know my assignment (Walter Reed) but I've been told it isn't guaranteed until I get ordered to OBLC. Talk about nerve-wracking!!

I agree NCO's are your "KEY TO SUCCESS" throughout your career. Why do you call it SHAM houston tell us more :o:D

Sometimes orders are a pain however, I would keep checking with your branch they can call you as soon as it comes through. I know my duty station was up in the air until I got orders. What rank are u all coming in as and where will you be traveling from?

I'll be there, and after that stationed in Fort Lewis. I'm pretty amped to be going to the west coast.

Jealous!!! I hope if I don't get to go to my #1 choice (secret...I don't like talking about my first choice. Feel like I'm putting a jinx on it!!!) that I will get Lewis. I was stationed there before and we absolutely loved the Pac NW!! Soooo much to do!! Good luck with BOLC!!! You're gonna have a blast!!

I hear you! One of my choices was Lewis, but w/ all the requests for it, I highly doubt I'll get it! lol.

Do you guys have any feedback / input on which posts are 'in-demand' aside from Lewis?

i think there is a couple of folks who want ft carson...its a smaller facility though and its a MEDDAC. The mountains and colorado springs are very pretty though and all the horseback riding, white water rafting and hiking a person can handle 8-D

Thanks for the well wishes. Hopefully you get your first choice too. I've been to Lewis only once but it left a lasting impression. At any rate I imagine BOLC should be fun too and have more freedom than basic training had. From what I hear it sounds like theres free time here and there on the weekends to explore San Antonio. I'm hoping at a minumun to see the Alamo and get the wounderful APFT done with the first time around.

BOLC was NOTHING like basic. I had fun in basic too, but there's not a whole lot of time to think about how miserable it could've been!! In BOLC there is a lot of down time. You're in school during the day, free at night. Even at the FTX the duty day was over around 5 or 6 if there wasn't something that needed to be done at night like land nav or some classes to prepare for the next duty day tasks. We actually timed how long we were standing in formation not doing anything out at the FTX and is was 36 hours of wasted time during the three weeks. Weekends are yours and there is lots of time to explore San Antonio. Definitely knock your PT test out right off the bat. It will put your mind at ease for the rest of the course and allow you to concentrate on other tasks. I did have a great time, but because it's a leadership training course be prepared for a lot of FRAGOs. In basic you were told what to do and you did it. In BOLC you're told what the expectations are and your appointed leaders have to execute. So when you get a group of people together that know everything and start butting heads you start chasing your tail while they're figuring it out from above. That was the hardest thing for me to overcome. Anyway, have a great time. If you were prior service, then you already know what an awesome extended family the Army is. You're going to me a lot of great people with a lot of different areas of expertise. Learn from everyone and take a little piece from each person you come into contact with. I hope to hear all about your experience!!! Good luck!!!

Thanks for all the info posted! This will be very useful when I attend OBLC. I just received my orders in December and have yet to attend my first drill next weekend as a 2LT ANC. I am trying to find dates for OBLC in San Antonio so I can plan. Does anyone know where I can find these?? Someone posted about attending in August so I wonder if that will be the next one?? It sounds like the slots fill up quickly so any advice about how to go about doing this would be greatly appreciated.

Just an FYI for those wondering how to find out what is open for nursing slots and what you can do to make things more favorable to get the duty station you want, or find out your chances of getting what you want, please contact me and I'll walk you through it, its pretty simple. Im prior service AF and Army. Was/is an NCO Gunner and Tank Commander 03-07 2nd Platoon Bravo Co 2-72, got off of active in 07 to come here to UW-Milwaukee to get my 3rd degree. I am 5 months away from graduating with my BSN RN, I already know that my OBLC date is Aug. '11 and I already know my first duty station is Hood. I know the ins and outs of the Army, for me this will be a piece of cake. I suggest for the non-prior service you buddy up and find someone who is prior service bc there is a lot of info you need to know. For me it will be like PLDC, the prior service should be good about helping you out. Im going back in and going the CRNA route. Already spoke to the proper ppl and its all locked up. but yea any one have any questions contact me. I helped someone last year go through everything from start of the application process to her first duty station and allll the stuff in between. And trust me, the recruiter doesnt have your best interest at heart! I personally know a few recruiters and yea the Dark Side is real interesting! Good luck to those going to OBLC at Sham Houston, and no that isn't a misspell lol. Its called Sham Houston for a reason!! lol And always remember NCOs lead the way!! And I may be a nurse and future ArmyCRNA, but will always be a tanker at heart putting steel on target!!
