January 2014 Broward College

Published

Welcome.... This is a thread created for January 2014 Broward College students and others who are interested in there ADN program. We all have so many questions and concerns about the program.

We are 7-8 months away from sitting in the first class of the January 2014 nursing program. What have you been doing to prepare for this? What pre-req's do you have left to take? What inspired you to become a nurse? Is BC your first school of chose? Are there any other programs your interested in?

Don't be shy. Don't lurk. Share your thoughts.

Thanks!!! :)

No problem. Here to help :)

Organize. Hmm. Toughie. Ok well when it comes to classes I make sure i get up about an hour to an hour and a half before class even starts. One minute late to clinical and it's a write up (if Central or North) (retrack if South), theory is not mandatory but I try to go UNLESS I have a care plan or 20+ page patient profile due by next clinical. I take into consideration if there's an assignment that may take hours, I'll ask a classmate to take notes. I'm in Central so if I had to skip lunch I would buy something and eat in class while taking notes. No more parties. You won't have time. Study drugs while doing laundry, dishes, etc. My pharm professor this past summer, Dr. K, allowed us to record so I listened to his lectures driving to and from school and to sleep.

Study in becomes a full time job. Jot down key points and take them with you. Use study aids such as NCLEX practice questions to get used to the exam style. Read the book. Don't read the day before an exam. These exams are no joke. Think critically. I study every day at least 3-4 hours. Don't cram a 10 hour session the night before IT DOESNT WORK.

Hardest: Transition Process (for LPN-RN) which is the same as Process 1&2 for generic. Easiest so far: GIGU

Tag.... To all the Mommies out there. Have you started talking with family and good friends that can help you out during your journey?

This is rough draft of my what I will put on my fridge. I have 4 children 17, 13,,10 & 3. I will be 36 in DEC. but I look 26. LOL

Tweek it for you family.

There willbe a BIG adjustment to our family. Please know that Mommy loves you all, but I norder to help our family mommy must be in school a lot. I will be gone a lot. Please know that I LOVE YOU…… & “this is for the good of our colony” quotefrom A Bug’s Life. Please know that thisis temporary.

**PRAY FOR EACH OTHER!!! Please drop the bad habitof thinking for Mom and Dad we always make time for you all, and if you need something just ask.

1. Any forms that need to be filled out please give it to Daddy to fill out ex. Field trip forms, or give it to me tofill out. Don’t wait until we are in the car, or in the morning when I’m walkingout the door. Place it in the forms holder. 2. Anything that is IMPORTANT to you,and you need my assistance please let me know when you know. EXAMPLE: Going toschool early, Project Board, Food/Juice for a party. PLEASE….. ask DAD first, and Put a reminder in my phone if you need too.

3. Please remember your chores I want a$1.00 for each chore you forget to do!!:roflmao:

4. If you eat the leftovers you just won’t have dinner. I’m not cooking anything else. It’s called leftovers for a reason.Double the dinner saves me time in the kitchen.

5. Remember I’m in school Monday-FridayOn Tuesday and Wednesday I will be gone pretty much all day 5:45am- 7:30 pm.

6. If Dad/MOM, whomever has to drop youto school BE READY. It is your RESPONSIBLITY to be ready before us. We can’t wait. Give MOMMY A HUG & KISS I still need that.

(Replace husband with whomever your support system is)

I'm pretty much a planner. I like to know everything I can in advance. Especially if it is something that will affect my lifestyle. I've made menu plans, and revised chore list. I've been in the mommy business since I was 18, and I'm a bit old school when it comes down to the family. My kids are still learning how to cook, but they can clean. Maybe not how I would do it but practice makes perfect. Therefore, ladies don't overload yourself with so much you may have to past the torch. Rather it's dishes, dusting, vaccum cleaning, or taking out the garbage. They can do it. In addition for the our dear sweet husbands lol... put the kids school numbers in his cell phone so if it a situation he will know who is calling (besides your at clinicals all the minor stuff can be handled by him). Take him to the kids school and show him the main office and classroom if he doesn't know it. Even the carpool lane. You will be amazed how much stuff we do that they have now clue of. I forgot the pediatrician and child' dentist numbers as well. He can take them to appointments. If he hasn't learned yet well in my Kevin Hart voice. "Your gonna learn today". LOL I know some of you mom's are saying to yourself I can't let him do that, He won't ask the right questions, well.... you have to start somewhere. Do you think if you are working in the hospital on ICU you can drop your shift and run to an non-emergency all the time. Uhh... no... You won't be able to do this in clinicals either. How do I know? Well... I worked in a hospital as a PCA, and my friends that have gone off to be RN's & Clinical Managers have told me and I have seen it for myself. This is just the beginning of us balancing this profession. Missed holiday's with family, missing honor roll assemblies, your child's game, yes even as a PCA I missed some family events but that was my job. I'm not trying to scare you trust that's not my intention. However, I'm being real and if you didn't know or haven't thought about this you will now.

Hope my advice helps.

Am I the only one that didn't get an email from north campus??!!!Do they send them out at the same time to everyone??? or certain people??? Lol help???!!! Everyone keeps telling me they got an email from north all I got was an email from N.H.

I didnt get one either. I really want to go to North Campus. I praying that I get one tomorrow.

I am a single parent. Although my child is still a toddler, he requires so much attention. My support system is not that convenient, but I know a lot of sacrifice will be made. Better to do it now then later I say to myself at times. It is hard and I say to myself at times, 'how will I make it through'. Not to sound cliche, but I know that I serve a God who will not put more on me then I can handle. I know there will be times where my back will be against the wall or closer to the edge, but I have to keep calm and carry on.

Your Bless to have a support system, and a family who understands. We just to sacrifice to be successful...

I've already had my titers, flu-shot, PPD and physical done for work. Wednesday, I'll be getting my drug screening. Between this week and next week I'll complete the HSC certificates and early November, I'll be doing my fingerprinting and background check.
