Ivy Tech Question

Hello to all,

I am new here and joined because I am starting at Ivy Tech State College in the fall and would like to hear from others who have attended or have knowledge of the nursing program there. I haven't spoken to anyone yet about getting into the nursing school...I have to wait until my entrance exams over. I have heard it is extremely hard but I am trying not to get discouraged. I am going for my dream of becoming a nurse at the age of 37. I never thought it would be possible, but now I do. Any words of advice or knowledge of Ivy Tech's 2 yr AS in Nursing program? Lot's of Ivy Tech campuses offer this but be aware it is highly competitive to enter any of their programs in nursing. Even with perfect grades and scores the competition is fierce. Just not enough space for all the students. Which campus are you interested in? I have taken many general courses at Ivy Tech and have been trying for several years to get into a program of nursing. I have great grades but that isn't all it takes. I am probably going to take a CNA class this fall and maybe branch off into a different area of health care because I cannot get into a program. I also cannot afford a private college or state college. But depending on where you live you might have better luck. Keep in touch and let me know how it goes.

I have always heard that Ivy Techs program is good, but strict. I checked into Ivy Tech, but after I added up the time I would spend in school because of all the pre-req's I would have to take. I found another program (in Lousiville Ky) that I finished in one year with NO Pre-req's. (and it was cheaper to!)

What kind of nursing program did you find that you finished in a year with no prereqs? Is it an RN or LPN program? Just curious.

In answer to the OP. I went through the IVY Tech ASN program 3 years ago. Proudly graduated in 2001. I loved the program and yes it is not an easy program, but I don't think there are any easy nursing programs out there. My db went to the IU school of nursing and he had just as hard a time as I did. We are both going back this fall to get our BSN through IU so that should be interesting. Back to IVY Tech; the instructors I had were wonderful! I think a couple of the best ones have left since then though. The head of the program was Jan Kramer and I just loved her to death. Her door was always open to students who needed to talk or just drop by and say hi. Anyway, good luck getting into the IVY Tech program, I hope you make it. I think IVY Tech seems to be more geared to the older student and students with families, especially single parents. Maybe it really isn't but it seemed that way to me.

I got my LPN through Ivy Tech, and I was completely satisfied with them. I would've gone through them to get my ASN if there hadn't been such a long waiting list to get in. They were very organized and helpful. It is a strict program, but I liked that about them. Their LPN program was more of an ASN prep program- which had more general ed credits involved than the other LPN programs in the area. All of my instructors were top-notch as well.

Which IVY Tech campus are you looking into? (for OP) I work in Evansville and have Ivy tech student at my facility for clinicals, the students are excellent and the instructors are right on top of things (and them) Good luck

Late entry I know, but when I went to IVY tech ASN program, we we had our classes at Winona. Where are the classes being held now? Did they move them all to the main campus? Just wondering.

Hey all....when talking about Ivy tech... just a thought here...

I am an ASN student at IU in Columbus, Indiana. I've heard that the Ivy Tech in Columbus, Indiana just started an ASN program...this is their first year doing it, and from what I heard they didn't fill all their slots this year. I know first-hand how difficult it is to get into ASN programs, so just thought I would put the word out, if you live around south-central Indiana near Columbus, Ivy Tech there may be a little less competitive.

Hi, I am an Ivy Tech pre-nursing student. I applied to the ASN Columbus program and was turned down. (not enough points to make the group) I know Columbus has a good program, I really hope I make it in next fall. IN the meantime, I am seriously considering going to the Columbus LPN program, or Marian College for the ASN. I dont know how we can afford the private school, but at least I can get in. I am down to the wire with my current job, so I cannot afford to wait 2 years for something to happen. (My company announced today they will lay off 7000 of the 10,000 employees in December. We won't know if our office is one of the 3000 that will be left until Oct.)

I would definitely suggest getting your LPN if you need to get through quickly. I don't make what RN's make, but very close (LPN's in Indy make anywhere from $14-20/hr, depending on where you work) and it is a great way to get your foot in the door with nursing. Then you can go back and it is only one more year to get your ASN. I am in the LPN-to-ASN program right now at IU Columbus and it is a great program. So... if you want a career and fast, I would definitely suggest going the LPN route first. I wouldn't have done it any other way.

Glad you were able to get into an LPN program. I am over 5 years trying to get into 3 different ones outside my county. A's in all my prereqs - just too many people and not enought slots for them. Seems like that is the story all over Indiana. Doesn't help that I am older and not receiving government money and benefits - those people get first preference!

It is an LPN program, at The Health Institute in Louisville Ky. I started in March and finished in March. The only downfall is that they do not offer a RN program, and since you needed no pre-req's you don't have any to carry to somewhere else if you want to go for your RN. I didn't want to, so it worked out great for me. :)
