where do IV's get started?

Published

In the OR or the preop area?

Who starts them?

Specializes in Surgery.

Usually they get started in Holding or in Pre-Op and usually anesthesia starts them...That is what they do at my hospital..For little kids they will do it after they put them to sleep....With RN monitoring it may be different..Usually when I get those cases they already have an IV..Hope this helped

Specializes in OR.

Anesthesia starts new IVs in the OR. Sometimes pts come up already with IVs from the floor.

I work in a surgical prep area. If time allows I will usually get them started. If not, Anesthesia will start them in pre op holding.

Specializes in OR, transplants,GYN oncology.

Nurses start the IVs on AM admits/outpatients while during the admitting process in the oupatient dept.

Children have mask inductions without IVs, then the circulator starts the line once the child is asleep.

If nurses have trouble, anesthesia will do it.

bump

anyone else?

at the hospital i am a patient at

for young children mask induction iv after asleep

older kids/adults anesthesia starts in holding unless the patient asks for mask (i do cuz needles freak me out and i have bad veins)

note that this is a childrens hospital

IV is started in pre op by nurses or if for some reason it was not started (ie patient is late), it is then started in the OR by the circulator. Anesthesia may start if they prefer to do so. One general surgeon starts all of his pt IV. That is how it is done where I work.

For us, IVs are started in pre-op holding by the nurses there. If they have one that's particularly challenging anesthesia will start it for them and sometimes will deal with an itty bitty 22g for induction then start a large bore once the patient is asleep.

Specializes in 5 yrs OR, ASU Pre-Op 2 yr. ER.

Pre-op typically, by the pre-op nurse, or our MDA will come over and start a very difficult-to-stick IV.

Children's IVs are started after their mask induction.
