Bossy scrub person
We have a Tech that has been there for a million years and she tries to tell people how to circulate out of field..It kills me...

How long until i feel competent?
It took me about 1 year to feel comfortable..and Ive been there 2 years and I was telling someone today how I dont feel nervous anymore..I circulate every service and scrub all but neuro and open heart..Today in ortho we was using and instrument set I had yet to use and I was just calm and talked myself through it..Used to I would get so nervous and be really nervous around that doc..I was suprised at myself...I think working midnights built up my confidence alot especially since we are a trauma center..On midnights it was just me and a tech..Sometimes another tech was called it if 2 scrubs were needed...Best of luck!

? About Schools
I graduated from St. Marys in 2005 and I have to say I loved the school...I feel they really prepared me for the NCLEX and nursing..The instructors are really helpful and will go out of their way to help you if you have a problem..The only thing I didnt like was the sessions like the other poster said that you had to sign up for..I hated going down there for 15 minutes to watch a video...But overall I wouldnt change going down there..There is nothing wrong with a ADN...If you want to get your masters then I would consider doing the BSN..I am enrolled to attended Mountain State this fall and to get your BSN is one class a month and its all online which helps when you are working full time..So if you do get your 2 year degree there are great options for later if you want to get your BSN...

Anyone accepted to WVSCTC for Fall 2007 program?
Congrats on being accepted...I hear that is a great program..I went to St. Marys School of Nursing based out of Marshall..I am from around the Logan area..but as being in any nursing school be prepared and well organized..Being organized is the key to doing good in school..You will have alot of material..and do not study at the last minute...The tests are really hard and nursing school is totally different than your pre-req classes..Best of luck!!! I know alot of people that went there and they did great...

2 questions about gloves
I always double glove...I wear a 6 protegrity micro on the bottom beacause it is powder free (the powder makes my hands itch) and I wear a 6 1/2 white on top..It took me a while to figure out a good combination... As for punture I think the ortho gloves are good..they are a dark brown and made thicker..

Poll: Scrub or Circulate?
Scrub...Dont get me wrong I like to circulate but when you are working midnights with only one scrub tech and a nurse which is me it gets hectic being the only nurse there...I would rather scrub because there are a few of the scrub nurses and techs that drive me nuts..They seem not to have any of the basic things by the time the doc gets there and I am running my butt off to go get them..I have one tech in particular that if I am in a room with him I know I am going to be running to get things all evening..But I would rather scrub..I love scrubbing when I get the chance...But I love circulating too when I have a good scrub in the room with me..I love interacting with the patients..Like if they are scared before they are going to sleep just holding there hand making them feel better is great..

Surgical Nursing
I went straight to the OR out of nursing school and I love it..I do not regret not having floor nurse experience..I plan on staying in the OR..I say if you want to be a OR nurse then go for it.......My clinicals were nothing like the OR...I love it because it is different

Youngest age of a nurse
I was 20 when I graduated nursing school..I guess the youngest age would be 19..I know people I work with that were 19 when they graduated nursing school..That is getting your 2-year degree

Update-On My Own
I know how you feel..I did the same way..I have been out of training on my own now 6 months and I am now starting to get comfortable..There are still times that I get so nervous that I can not stand if..If I am circulating a procedure Ive never done or if I am working midnights and a bad trauma comes in..there are still docs that I am scared of..These are normal feelings IsseyM and they will start to get better and go away..the docs just have to be used to you doing things on your own..One doc I was scared of when I first started and now when I come in on evening shift he requests me to be in his room to circulate..you just have to give it time..everything WILL get better..There are going to be days to where you seem like you forget everything that has been taught to you and where you have to call and ask your charge nurse about things..Its OK....you may have learned to circulate and now you have to learn how to do it on your own..Now I am at the point to where I dont care what I do in the evening..I do a little bit of everything everyday..Like today I did ortho and general..Ive had days to where I have circulated ENT, Neuro, and Open Heart all in one day..But there will be a day come to where everything just clicks and you dont have to think so hard about things..It will come natural it just takes time..I know you may be tired of hearing that it takes time and I know I did but the truth is it does...Good luck on everything and i have no doubt in my mind that you will make a great nurse...

new nurse in the OR???
I went straight from Nursing School to the OR and I love it..I wouldnt have it any other way..You do perform nusing duties..You assess..When I am circulating I will look at my patients vitals and see how much blood they have loss or what rhythm their heart is in....I get to thinking will I need to order blood soon or will I need the crash cart..Dont let anyone tell you that you wont be doing nursing duties..the job is technical but you are also a patient advocate no matter where you work...You also put in foleys which is something nurses do..I also RN monitor which involves giving pts versed and so on for minor procedures..I have to assess my patient and watch their vitals..if you want to go for it..sometimes its hard for a nurse or a new nurse to get into the OR..If you have the chance and you want to do it..I do not regret not working on the floor..There isnt anything wrong with it but as a student I knew that I didnt want to work on the floor so I externed in the OR...Good luck on everything..

ob-gyn OR
Yep..the shoes thing is a good idea..i want to wear shoe covers now while doing a vag. prep..I ruined a new pair of shox with betadine..The only thing I dont like is the stirrups..It gets very tiring putting the stirrups up and taking them off the bed, etc..especially if it is quick cases.i dont mind scrubbing ob-gyn cases..I love c-sections..
