I've made the hard decision: Not doing nursing now.

Published

I posted before how I was battling with my decision to do nursing, after I toured a dental hygiene program. I've put so much energy into becoming a nurse. I've volunteered at hospitals, became a CNA, worked in LTC. I've been taking the pre-req's at college for a year. And all summer, I've struggled with what to do, if I want to continue on this path, or if I want to start a new one.

With much soul searching, I've decided to go after what I really want. I'm going to do a double major in Microbiology and Lab Technology. I felt like this was something I couldn't do, because of the level of sciences and math required, and my general lack of confidence in my abilities (one year of Inorganic Chemistry, one year of Organic Chemistry, one year of Physics, one year of Biology and one year of Calculus). But I'm feeling a lot better about myself, due to a great summer with a great mentor who really showed me that I need to believe in my abilities. And also my great husband, who has supported me in all my endeavors.

Anyway, this is going to take A LOT longer than nursing for me, because of how many pre-req's there are, which is frustrating, but I'm young and this is the best time to decide this is what I want to do. Unfortunately, my schedule at school right now reflects mostly my pursuit of nursing, so I'm going to spend the next week at school attempting to get into overloaded calculus and science classes. Wish me luck!

Anyway, I love this site and I think all of you are great! I wish all you pre-nursing and nursing students the best of luck! You are all awesome and I have tremendous respect for what you all are doing. It's just not for me, I think. Good luck and to all of you struggling in school, keep your head up! YOU CAN DO IT!

Thanks everyone for the kind words and encouragements! Good luck with all of your pursuits in nursing! Being a nurse is a wonderful thing be! :)

Good luck in all that you do and in pursuing this new path! I think it's good to constantly be re-evaluating your path!! Follow that dream!

The good thing about being a CNA is it does help you make a decision whether or not nursing is a good field for you without putting in too much schooling. So that was definately not a waste of your time.

Good luck with your new career path. The important thing is not whether you changed your mind, but that you have found your career bliss.
