IV therapy

LPNs used to do IVs, no idea if it is still allowed. Long ago, it was LPNs were the ones who taught me how to do IVs. Oh sure, you are taught in school, but, like everything else in nursing, you really really learn it on the job.

It's been a long time though, since i ever worked anywhere where LPNs were allowed to start IVs, but, it probably varies from state to state, or from facility to facility.

Seems like it should be allowed, imo, when various types of techs and phlebotomists, etc, are allowed to do venipunctures all day long.

I'm in PA, & I do start and administer IVs often. There are certain restrictions ( administration of blood, titrated drips,IV pushes etc.), but IVs are a part of my daily practice.

When I worked in Manitoba I also start and hang IV medications. We, Manitoba LPNs even do blood transfusion. The only thing we are not allowed to do is push IV medications. I went to school in Vancouver, BC. Was not taught Ivs during my pn program. I went to a two day IV course at the university in Manitoba. It varies depending on the state or city you live in. Most LPNs in Vancouver are not trained in IV, unless trained within their facilities.

What state are you in? Are you in the US?

In iowa you need to work as an lpn for 1000 hours before you can take the iv therapy course

Super old post but jusy wanted to let you know I am an LPN on an IV Therapy team. We have them in my system. We do everything, PIVs, midlines (powerglides, not cutdown), US guided PIVs, dressing and clave changes, TPA, venipunctures, central line blood draws, port access/deacess, assist in PICC insertion, flush and hep lock, removing central lines, assessment and trouble shooting. We are given latitude only because we are in the specialty and have proven our skills and there are only a handful of us, but we're out there!
