I have an interview soon with IU Health for their Patient Care Intern position (Indianapolis). It used to be called a Student Nurse Extern, but they changed the name recently. I'm interested in any experiences the forum members may have had/be having with the internship position. General info such as pay, scheduling/hours, +/- work experiences, do you like it/hate it, etc. I'm also interested if anyone knows what the potential is to be hired on later as a full time RN.
Thanks ahead of time for any/all responses!

Not sure about pci experiences ... however, they do tend to hire "their own" when they graduate, pass boards and become RNs

yes, i agree. they do typically tend to hire 'their own', so i think it would be great to get your foot in the door. MOST of the nurse tech/nurse interns end up working as an RN on their unit once they pass boards (i work at another IU Health facility). and our nurse interns generally work the same shift a regular nurse tech would work.. 12 hour shifts, same pay ($9-$10). it might depend on your region you're applying to however.

That rate seems low. I just accepted a PCI position beginning in December at $12/hr with up to $4/hr more with additional differentials possible.

just wondering how long after the application did or were you called for an interview? I have submitted my application and I have recieved an auto-email response from the recruiter, but no call for an interview.
Thanks.

I am a PCI at IU hospital in one of their ICUs. My base rate is $12 plus 2-4 more for weekends and nights. I have had a wonderful experience and make my own schedule. They ask that you work 12 hours every month I believe. If you do a good job they are more than willing to hire you on most units based on availability. Let me know if you have any more questions!

I got hired as a PCI on the IUH University OR... One problem my classmates are having that were hired on the floor is that they get called off a lot. In the OR, I work 8 hour shifts once a week and they only hire New RNs that were PCIs only.

I work on the PACU floor at University Hospital and I recommend that any nursing student definitely pursues this type of position. I make 12/hour and make my own schedule. As mentioned before, I am lucky to be on a unit that doesnt call me off. With the lay offs its not going to be as easy to just get hired on once you become an RN, but the experience will definitely help you to get a job.
