Ouch I feel really stupid today. I can't even apply those things I learn from school specially under pressure. I keep making mistakes. Does anyone here have the same kind of problem? Thanks

Learn from those mistakes so you won't repeat them. Do your best. Read more. Ask questions. You'll learn some of the skills while working. Don't be harsh on yourself. Give it some time. Your on your way to greatness. ;)

so true what first poster stated... yes, it is normal.. you will get there :)

I just had my 2nd day on the floor. I feel all clumsy and keep forgetting stupid things. It'll get better with time and practice. We can do it!

I think this issue happens in a lot of professions where you learn concepts in school through study, lecture, notation, etc. It's set up so that once you actually start learning the skills and techniques, you'll have your knowledge to guide you, so while learning a "hands on" skill you don't have to also learn contraindications, what "" is useful for, etc. b/c somewhere in your brain, you'll already know that.lol. Maybe you're at that point where the they are two separate entities. Eventually your knowledge and technique will blend together and your skill will increase

School is good for setting up the base - the foundation. Nobody looks at the hole in the ground with a lump of rebar and concrete and thinks "Wow! What a magnificent building!" Similarly, one expects new nurses to be rough around the edges, have difficulty with time management and grapple intensely with critical thinking.

And just as with buildings, so it is with nursing. A good foundation helps support great buildings - good schooling gives rise to great nurses over time.

chin up!

cheers,

how new are you? I'm reaching a year of nursing practice and trust me, that feeling goes away! Like a PP said, school is a foundation, but most of your learning is actually done on the floor!!! We all make stupid mistakes. Wanna hear some of mine?

I got an order for 2 different tests on JP drainage. So I neatly took 2 containers, and emptied half into one, and half into the other. Lab called me 30 mins later asking why I sent 2 samples... lmao.

Or how about I was drawing labs and forgot to turn off the fluids. Got diluted/crazy results, freaked out, put out a stat call to the dr...and my preceptor LET ME call him and get orders for all these ridiculous electrolytes. (she later called him back and informed him I was a newbie and I'd redraw the labs) LOL!!!!

How about my pt had a run of v tach in the middle of the night, so I freaked out, called the attending. He gave me orders to consult cardiology on call. They called me and gave me orders for atenolol BID even though the patient was already on metoprolol. Then the attending walked in in the morning, opened the chart and goes "Melanie. Isn't cardiology already on the case? And why is he on metoprolol AND atenolol? Really. You're gonna start p***ing people off soon.". I cried all the way home, haha. Mainly cus I felt so STUPID.

Point is...It gets better with time!!!!
