It is Recommended that I take "Intro to BIO" before required science pre-req's?....

Published

The BIOLOGY 100 is recommended and Not required so I wanted to know how my f'ellow pre-nursing students' feel about this? Does anyone think it's worth it or should I jump into my anatomy course and other sciences? What have your experiences been?

Any advice/input would be super helpful as I am at a crossroads because I really want to complete my 'required' pre-requisites*

Thank you :)

I am taking BIO and my advisor recommended it, I think it'll be helpful to either go into A&P or Micro. I was hating it the first couple weeks, but now I love it and am glad I did it. My teacher relates as to how Bio goes into the nursing field, microbio and A&P so its easier to understand it. JMO

At my school the class is 1100-Intro to Biological, General and Organic Chemistry and is required to even take any of the needed sciences. I think it gives you a good base to build from it refreshes any info you may have learned before and many future teachers touch in things they know are taught in that class so it may be good to have some background. if you are confident maybe just take a 5 week course or other shortened lenght just to refresh your memory. Good luck.

My school has this rule that if you didn't have a grade "C" or better in biology or don't feel that you are strong in biology then they "recommend" you take Human Biology before A&P.

I took human bio last semester for 2 reasons:

1- I hadn't taken biology in 20 years

2- I barely passed biology in high school

I didn't get as much time to study as I had hoped but still managed a "B-" in Human biology. In speaking to someone who already took A&P, she said it was alot like human bio but more in-depth. So I am very glad that I took the human bio, it gave me a general understanding and I expect that A&P will expand my understanding (or at least I am hoping it will).

It really depends on how you feel about your ability whether you should take the recommended bio or just jump right in to A&P. Was biology something that you did well in when you were in school? Would you feel better taking a "refresher" course before jumping into the harder course? When was the last time you took a biology class?

And remember, just because they are recommending you take the course doesn't necessarily mean that you are required to take it. It may be that your advisor recommends the course to everyone that is going in to nursing to give them a little more background before A&P, or maybe your advisor recommends it to people who haven't taken a course in awhile as a way to try and help them do better in A&P. My advisor recommended human bio but also told me that I could just take A&P if I wanted. I decided that it was better for me to take a refresher course.

I had to take it because it was required to transfer to the CSU...at the JC level it was a pre-req to all biology classes but there was a teacher that would let you in even if you had not taken it. Personally I felt like it was another hoop to jump thought; it was everything I had already learned in highschool bio...but it was a good review. I think if it has been some time since highschool it would be a good idea for someone to take it; even if just for a review course.

If it is not a requirement DO NOT take it. You should not waste time taking a class you don't need to. I am not a current nursing student, but I start nursing school in a month and when I was at a community college taking Micro and A&P I never would think taking an intro to bio helped or would have helped. Basically just follow the course curriculum prerequisite courses for each class. I mistakenly did not take chemistry, A&P, or micro even though I could've right away b/c I had chemistry in HighSchool.

It's "strongly recommended" at my school, and I was planning on taking it. That was until I talked to an advisor who told me that it really wasn't necessary, and it was my choice. Biology was never difficult for me, so I decided not to take it, however, if I felt like it would have helped much, I would have. If it's not required, and you feel okay without, I'd say don't worry about it.

Wow, I appreciate all of the Comments/Advice. Your input really helped out.

Thanks again :)

And if its not required, and it don't look like you will get an 'A', keep your eye on the calender for last day to Audit class. But go to all classes, get tests (answers if can from students), and DO ALL labs physically (only need to do first couple of labs with 3+ references all the way before Audit date for busy work practice). Depends on your priorities and schedule. Depending on your teacher, they can load you up pretty easy with busy work, quizes, and tests every week All for a class you may not need, but just need to be familiar with cell level organisms and how to do labs - the time consumer.

Beware, its a filtering class like A&P I used to be for nursing. Pick your teachers very carefully, and if its a last minute schedule: Audit time! :sasq:
