Is being unprofessional in an interview the new norm??

Hello to all! I've worked as a CNA/medical assistant for almost four years and am currently on the job hunt after an unexpected turn of events with school, and I'm starting to wonder if I'm crazy or if the rest of the world is. I had three interviews last week at various doctor's offices. During the first, the interviewer (not the practice manager but the billing manager?) told me she was completely unprepared for the interview. After she looked at my resume, she said "I don't even know why you're here, you're only going to be bored here. Why did you even apply for this job?". Uh, because I need work?? My second interview was at a primary care office where I sat in the waiting room listening to the front desk people talk - loudly - about how much they hated their jobs and how much they hated the manager, wish they would get fired so they could get unemployment, etc. When I was called back to speak to the office manager, she took one look at me and said "This is going to be short because we can't afford you". I don't know if she was referring to my experience or the way I was dressed, which I thought was appropriately professional - black slacks/boots, purple sweater and a colorful scarf to offset the dark colors. Nothing extravagant. The third interview was with a pediatrician who stopped the interview for almost 15 minutes - 15 minutes! I watched the clock on the wall! - to talk with her receptionist about what she was doing that weekend, how the kids were, how she tried this new recipe out and loved it, etc. while I sat there, wondering if I should just ask if it was a bad time and should I come back later? Seriously? Is this the way employers are now? Is it just because the economy is so bad and so many people need jobs that they think they can act like this and it doesn't matter? I feel like if I take the time to dress nicely, prepare myself with references/extra resumes/questions about the practice, show up early and be pleasant and respectful and professional, why can't they value my time and do the same? AM I JUST CRAZY!?

No, you are not crazy. These are examples of people with jobs who

are insensitive and selfish. Continue your search, there is a good position

out there for you. The interview shows you what type of work environment

it is. Do not waste time thinking of these inappropriate individuals...

The worst encounter I had was in a Doctors office. The secretary and

MA who were at the front desk burst into laughter when I asked for

an application. It was one of the most rude behaviors I had seen, esp

in front of a room full of patients. Later the secretary stated, due to

finances they were not hiring RN. I was out the door in heartbeat and

upset as I was new to the state. Things worked out and weeks later

I was hired at a wonderful setting...

I had been invited to an interview about 60 miles from where I live. I came. The Director of Nursing Services who had invited me by phone told me as soon as she saw me that the position had been filled from within.

I do not know why things like this happens but unfortunately it does.
