Is taking basic Biology & Chemistry together a bad choice?

No worse than taking A&P and Micro together. People have done it, although I wouldn't recommend that in an accelerated summer session.

Depends on a lot of things: Do you have to work? Do you have kids? Do you have lots of time to study? Does nursing program acceptance depend on GPA?

If you've taken this stuff before, it might not be too bad. If it ends up being to much, you can always drop if you think it's going to adversely impact your GPA. Just be sure to do so before the deadline, since some programs will count W's against you.

I think if you are willing to put in the work and committment you can do it. I am taking A&P 1 and Chem this fall so I know what I am in for!

I couldn't do it. I took A&P 1 and Chemistry together, and failed chemistry (embarrasing "D")...i DID get a B in A&P1 tho! I re-took chemistry last year (summer) ALONE and got an A....I have a weak background in math, so that didn't help....and 4 kids to boot...that didn't help...so like the other posters said, if you don't work f/t and are pretty good at math and memorizing, go for it.

I took A&P 1 and Chemistry together and had no problem. I got good grades in both courses and was able to complete two science prereqs.:)

I would not recommend it if you are working or have a lot of family responsibilities.

I think many people do this. Got to get those prereqs out of the way you know. If you have a good head for science, it is no problem. Last quarter I took A&P, Chem and Micro. It was a tough term I admit. But I did very well (I wasn't working so I had the time to devote to study). I really didn't have a choice. This is a second career move for me and I've got to get back into the job marked as soon as possible. The once-a-year application cycle demanded it. I just couldn't wait out a year while I took the prereqs at a slower pace.

It also depends on which biology course it is too. The general biology course for non-biology majors is a lot less intensive than either the major-specific bio or A/P. You will still have to study but those intro courses tend to focus more on concepts instead of finite processes. I took the major-oriented bio and inorganic chem the first semester of my freshman year and almost killed myself, but there were people who pulled through a lot easier than I. If you want to get your pre-reqs out of the way more power to you and good luck with it, it takes time and studying but people combine the two all the time.

In mt humble opinion it all depends on how bad you want it. I took A&P II, Pharm, Micro and Chem I togather and I got straight A's. BUT I wanted it more than anything and I nearly went nuts doing it! No I didn't, yes I did, shut up I'm talking, not you shut up! Damn I guess I may have exagerated the "nearly" part If you want it you can do it, but there is always a price. Good luck!!

That's a good point. The major-specific bio is a lot harder. But boy did it help later on with Micro and A&P. People who took general bio would come up to me and say, "You know this already?" They often said they wished they had taken the tougher course. Of course, the major-specific bio doesn't cover everything, and you still have to study a lot, but it sure helps.

I just took Human Bio last semester, and I was the only student applying to nursing school. It was mostly for non-medical majors, but I got so much out of it. I hadn't taken a Bio course in 20 years, but it helped me immensely with the A&P 1 I'm taking now.

if it is possible to take one then the other i would do that. i spaced my classes out to where i took a year to get all these classes out of the way. (except or micro. i have not taken it yet) this fall i will begin the nursing classes. but if you need to get them done asap, my advice would to set aside alot i mean alot of study time. best of luck to ya.:)

I have DEFINITELY decided to take the Biology class 1st then....Chem. in Jan. I thank everyone who provided me w/great insight as to what would be the best plan to follow. My hat goes off to all who were able to take A & P courses along w/ Chem. and Micro, how amazing esp. being able to attain such good grades in the courses! I know I will have my hands full w/ Algebra & Biology. I wish everyone much success in their upcoming course sessions & semesters. Thanks again!

If only I had know that Bio and Chem would be one of the more "easier" courses. I have one more year left so I have been thru all of the patho's, the A&P"s the Med-Surg and peds, etc. SO looking back those classes were a breeze compared to what you have to look forward too. I say go for it!
