so let me start off by saying im an lvn and want to get into the rn program but of course a lot of you all know that there is a wait list or now a lottery system to get in. bummer!
anyways there's a school somewhat near my home with no wait list but its 60k for the program but its only 18 months!!!!!
question:
1. is that too much to pay for the rn program???
my mom says its not worth paying so much and just wait forever to get into the program at my local jc.
i dont know what to do???
what are your thoughts, advice, anything??????????
plz help thanks
This sound an awful lot like Platt College. There are several threads on here about Platt and I believe that they are a place to be avoided. If a place has no waiting list, that might be a red flag. I'd check into their accreditation and ask others who are in the field about the college.
I would say wait. I know you want to get in NOW, but it seems like jobs are few and far between. After you graduate, you'll be saddled with $60,000 worth of debt and what if no one is hiring by that time either? That has the potential to get quite scary.
These places that are not affiliated with major universities always have some problems. Look before you leap!
$60 grand is waaaay too much. Wait, especially since jobs have dried up, and there's no guarantee that you'd get the job paying the big difference to pay that loan that you'd surely have to take. And if they aren't accredited, it sure isn't worth it.....especially if you choose to advance. Hang in there and check out other programs first, there's got to be something better.
Also keep in mind that a lot of these so called colleges do not have transfer agreements with other schools. This means when or if you wish to pursue your degree further none of your credits transfer to a major university, leaving you paying back lots of $ and having to pay to take the classes again in the future. They may tell you that their credits transfer but ask them to what universities. STAY AWAY.
xLovelyMakeupx, where r u in CA. I applied March 2009 to Ventura college and start January 2010. Not much of a wait...
Allen Hancock college, Sta Maria, little to no wait. SBCC 6-12 mo wait. 60K is crazy in this economy...student loans r never discharged in bankruptcy.
60K!!! What an absurd amount especially for an LPN bridge!! My program is roughly $8,500 - $9,000 and that is for 6 qtrs/2 yrs (ADN). Just started the 4th qtr/2nd yr and this is where the LPN students have joined us. I can't imagine them paying even $10,000 & we are an accredited school and have an agreement with a University to have a smooth transfer for a Bachelor's degree.
I would definitely wait.
Just as a comparison: I've been admitted to the Accelerated 2nd degree BSN program at Georgetown University (DC), starting in January. This is an RN + BS degree program, which you take nonstop (no summers off) for 16 months. The total cost for this program is about $70,000 for the 16 month program.
And I have no intention of paying that kind of money. I'm waiting to see if I qualified for a scholarship from a local hospital, which would pay $56K of the $70K tuition, in exchange for a 3 year employment commitment to work at that hospital.
So: $60K for an LPN? That's just crazy. I'd suggest you try to get a job at a local hospital, which in all likelihood will have a program that pays for employees to go to school part time. Who knows, they might even give you a scholarship to get an RN.

Oh my, you should definitely NOT spend/go into debt for 60K, and they should be sued.
