A new hospital is being built here and supposedly they are going to have magnet status. All the research I have done online indicates nurses are NOT in favor of the way it is currently implemented.
How do you guys feel?

Hello,
From what I suppose a hospital will not just "have" magnet status because that is a process which a hospital applies for and is granted. If the hospital isn't even built yet, nor has staff then I would be surprised if it can have "status" upon completion.
Also, as a current unlicensed assistive personnel who has worked in four facilities that had manget status...it means nothing to me.

i tend to think it is a joke. in arizona at least. all hospitals are supposedly magnet. haha. coming from a new grad that was inside most of them, the 'magnet' hospitals didn't magnetize me to join their staff. (nor would i let some of the 'magnet' hospitals electively treat my loved ones)
seems like a bunch of hooey.

Actually not all the hospitals in arizona are magnet. one in tuscan, 2 in phoenix, (I guess you could say all the hospitals in scottsdale are) they are two of them and they are both Magnet. That it is. and trust me there are a lot more than 5 hospitals in arizona.
magnet status hospitals in phoenix: banner good sam, jcl north mountain, and scottsdale heathcare shea.
i never said all hospitals in arizona are magnet. i just said the one's that are (the one's in the phoenix area that i did my clinicals rotations at) did not overly impress me.
here's a link to the latest hospitals in az deemed magnet: http://phoenix.bizjournals.com/phoenix/stories/2006/11/06/newscolumn2.html

Seems to me that Magnet is a very high-priced marketing tool and once one hospital in a community has it, the others in the area have to follow suit to compete. As a nurse, haven't seen anything spectacular come of it. Nothing that some common sense and decent leadership couldn't have done themselves without the magnet "honor".
That said - aren't I just on a Magnet UPC council yet AGAIN. Whoopie!

Sometimes it is, Sometimes it isn't.
If a hospital has a good administration that listens to the staff and takes collegiality seriously, Magnet status is just icing on the cake.
If the place sucks, Magnet staus is like slapping lipstick on a pig.

hay guys,
i currently work in a magnet hospital, and we have just obtained magnet status for a second time. a hospital cannot be built and just have magnet status, it's a huge long process in which the hospital actually has to apply, they send representatives that come to your facility and go through all of the nursing processes (shadowing nurses, going through charts, and all documentation, etc...), and read through press gainey reports. basically it's like a "test" and you get a pass or fail... in other words, based on thier findings through their very detailed observations and interviews, you are then designated magnet, or not.
in my experience, it was like a jcaho survey. it's that detailed, or at least it was in our facility two times over. it's a prestigious designation, and knowing what the whole thing entailed, i'm proud to be employed at our hospital and under magnet recognition.
