Is it possible to work as an RN on an L&D unit as a CNM?

Published

I'm a lover of knowledge and am seriously considering going back to school for my CNM degree. However, I just want the opportunity to learn and expand my knowledge base in the area. Would it still be possible for me to work as an RN on the L&D unit while being registered as a nurse midwife, or would I be "over qualified" and thus overlooked?

If you're actually an RN, sure.

Yes. A couple of my classmates in CNM school were L&D nurses and ended up staying at their old jobs and not working as midwives. That said, they were already employed as L&D nurses even before CNM school.

Thank you for the feedback :-) This makes me feel better knowing that I have the possibility of staying on the floor.

Not sure why you would do that. I have known of a couple of NP's that continued to work as RN's mostly for the schedule that fit their childcare needs. And sadly, the RN job didn't pay much less

We have at least one RN on our floor who works as a CNM at a different hospital.

Why would you want to spend all the money to get a CNM/Master's degree if your goal is to be an L&D staff nurse?

Sad, the pay differential is apparently not that much. People have no idea what they are worth.

You have NPs working for 80 and 90k. I think it is very sad.
