Is your place of employment offering you the flu vaccine?

The hospital that I work at is not immunizing any of the nurses, and I am quite surprised by this. I understand that severity of the shortage, but arent healthcare workers in the high risk category?

I can see it now, once the influenza pts start getting hospitalized, it will spread like crazy.

I don't understand how we can receive a vaccine from England but can't receive medication from Canada. How does the FDA monitor the vaccines from England?

The hospital I am at is immunizing employees but I am going to pass on it this year. There are too many people that need it worse than me. I know it is rolling the dice but wouldnt do it if we were not so short of vaccine.

I got mine the first day of the flu shot clinic at my hospital. There were a lot more people there than usual. This year your name had to be on a list. The list was of the employees that have direct patient care. Wonder if any of the administrator got one?????

Our hospital has some flu vaccine (aka: liquid gold) and those who wanted the shot were immunized (thankfully). Those nurses who DECLINED the shot (unethical, in my opionion) are another thread! However, while working the other day, our pediatric infectious disease doctor told us he hadn't been able to get a flu shot because their office doesn't have any. How ironic is that? Needless to say, we scrounged up a dose for him.

Our facility also gives to direct care...........does not include administrators. I am just going to bypass so hopefully someone who really needs it gets it.

I was so shocked when our infection control nurse came in with a basket full of flu vaccines and asked who wanted one, my jaw dropped! Signs all over the hospital stating there will be no flu vaccines this year! Yes, I did take it as I am a primary care nurse, and the only way to do that is to be healthy. No one benefits if I am sick.

I think that once healthcare employees start calling in sick, that employers will start to "find" extra doses.

I have asthma, and when I get the flu, it will go into bronchitis or pnuemonia. I have already stockpiled sick time and extra money to pay for bills in preparation for getting ill. I know from past experiences that it can take me up to 2 weeks to recover from the secondary infections.

My employer gives us the flu vac. at R5.00. My previous employer gave all his staff the vac. as we were a very small staff compliment.

The biggest hospital in our area doesn't have the flu vaccine. They ordered from the company with the problem. A lot of the area MD offices did the same. My 6 year old and I both have asthma and haven't found a doctors ofc w/the vaccine.

While healthcare providers can't seem to get the vaccine, Piggly Wiggly and Publix (grocery stores) have it and administering it to anyone that can pay.

Perhaps the vaccine should be sold only to healthcare unless there is excess. After all, do you want the hospitals short staffed because all the employees got the flu?

:uhoh21: In South Africa only Dr and pharmasists may keep the vaccine and only healthcare professional may administer it.

How can you say it is unethical not to have the flu vaccine? I have been nursing since 1983 and have always worked directly with patients be it in a ward theatre or is a nurse in a GP's rooms. I have never had the vaccine and never been off with the flu or had any flu symptoms. If one has a lowered resistance or some other illness it is important to be vaccinated if not I think it is your choice.

Our facility is giving free flu shots to all employees who have patient contact.

what is up with this post? On my computer, the "hots" in the word "shots" is underlined and in a different color. I can click onto the word, and it boots me out of allnurses.com and into a different site with advertising of a man out of work. What's up? Is this my computer? Is this allnurses.com advertising? or is this from the poster? NOT cool, IMHO.

Did it again! This irks me. The word "shot" above, takes you to the "hotjobs" web site, and completely boots me out of allnurses.com.

what gives?
