I'm new here so this might have already been addressed, but I was wondering if someone could tell me if being an OB/GYN nurse is a rewarding specialty? I'm a student right now and I have always wanted to choose OB/GYN or Midwifery nursing. Is there one specialty that is more favorable than another? Are these specialties very hard to learn or get into right after graduation?
If you guys could just give me a little advise or some suggestions, that would be GREAT!! I would appreciate anything you guys have to give me!
Thanks!!

I love OB nursing. It lets me see people at one of the happiest and most meaningful times in their lives. To get to see the miracle of birth everyday...its just great. The patients are usually very appreciative too. Its a great job!

If this is the area that you truly want to be in, then YES, it is rewarding. Midwifery, of course, requires more education after nursing school, and you would benefit from working L&D before starting that.

welcome to the ob/gyn/midwifery forum. YES OB nursing is very rewarding. No, it's not easy to learn, taking about 2 years to really be competent (fulltime). And more to to master it. But it's worth it and if it's your dream, go for it. I got my job in OB right out of nursing school and have been practicing 7 years. No looking back!

Right on! That's what I have found in my study, two years is about right to become competent... Yes, I think it is the best job ever! ANd I am in my 20th year!

OB nuring is where my heart is set right now (I'm a pre-nursing student). It's also the ward of the hospital I'm volunteering in right now! To the OP, stick to it if it's something you love and have passion for!

So rewarding! I did Postpartum/NBN/Antepartum for almost 3 years plus 6 mos med surge before that knowing that eventually I would make my way to L&D. I've been doing L&D 2 mos now and I love it. I KNOW this is where my career in nursing will forever be. I love the intesity and the relationship you form with your patients. It's hard to describe, but it's like they're so vulnerable yet so strong at the same time, and they depend on you to help them and support them and give them direction. I love the trust and communication and critical thinking and hands on nursing and labor support. I feel so honored to be doing what I'm doing and to part of bringing babies into this world! Don't get me wrong, it's hard. It's overwhelming and demanding and really intense and I know that part of it for me is that I'm new to L&D and have a lot to learn. It is so worth all of it though. If it's your dream I say go for it. You won't have any regrets :wink2:

I love OB but I am on an LDRP unit which means we do everything. Personally just doing Mother/baby (without the labor component) would bore me to death. I like the variety of doing something different every day.
I second that Betsy. I LOVE LDRP!

Hi Betsy! :)
I miss working with you and I miss LDRP's but I agree with you and that is why I almost exclusively do L&D and not Mother/Baby. Although M/B is a nice break every now and then!
