Hello!
I'm going to be participating in an ABSN program next year, and before I pick which school I wish to attend out of the ones I have been admitted to, I was just wondering whether or not the NCLEX is state specific? In other words, does the state you take the NCLEX in determine what state you can be a nurse in?
In that same regard, I am also wondering if the state of the school you get your BSN in is the state you need to take the NCLEX in?
I'm new to this, so any advice or previous experience to help enlighten me would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you in advance!! :)

No, the NCLEX is not state specific. You can attend nursing school in any state and apply to take the NCLEX in another state, as long as you meet the education requirements of that state's BON, then when you ready to write the NCLEX you can do so in a third state.
Great! Thank you so much for that clarifying response!! :)
Do you know where I can find requirements for different states BON?
Also, once you take the NCLEX, do you just have to renew your license and that's it? What if you move to another state?
Thanks again!
You should be able find specific requirements on the individual state BON websites.
Once you take and pass the NCLEX you won't have to take it again. It's easier if you maintain at least one active license, however if you allow it to lapse most states allow you to reinstate, though this can be painful.
As far as relocating, all that is required to apply to the state BON for licensure by endorsement; the information is readily available on the BON website. Aside from only being allowed to posses one multi-state license you can be licensed in as many states as you wish.

The NCLEX is national, not state-specific. In fact, the 'N' in NCLEX stands for 'national.' There's no such thing as the Alabama NCLEX or the Michigan NCLEX.
If you are originally licensed in California and end up relocating to Virginia, you will need to obtain a Virginia license via the endorsement process. Each state board of nursing maintains a website with explicit directions on the process to obtain a nursing license by endorsement.
Wow, you have both been so helpful.
Thank you both entirely for answering these questions!!
