Is it a Low Salary? But rewarding?

I was talking with my b/fs mother this evening and she told me that only making 50k a year as an RN was not very much. Not only does she remind me of this all the time but so does my b/f--kind of like I am going to school for nothing. I always thought it sounded pretty good, pay wise. :uhoh21: I have 4 more semesters to go and I want to do L/D, something I will look forward to getting up and going to work for! So nurses out there I need some encouragement that I am not wasting my time in school doing what I really want. Even if the pay isn't that great can't it be rewarding because you are doing what makes you happy? ( no one else seems to understand this ) :crying2:

very discouraged!

Ok...that's just stupid.

$50,000 is a goodly amount in my opinion...not that a beginning new-grad nurse will actually make that much, but still. I wouldn't cry if I was making $50,000. That's about what my husband and I make COMBINED right now.

And just think...if you stay single...all's the more for you!!!

I agree with you. I make a fraction now with our combined incomes and survive just well. Not luxuries but happy. :)

Now with 50 grand a year, I could ask no more. That is just me though.

First, you can't go into nursing for the money. Well, you can, but if you don't really want it for reasons other than the money...you're not going to be very happy.

Second, nursing school will load you with enough WEIGHT to carry so get rid of the ANCHOR!

You sound like you really want it-DO IT! The only person that really matters at the end of the day is YOU!

Good luck!

Good grief! My husband (who holds a master's degree in theology and has been a minister for 25 years) brings home about $45k a year. We managed to raise two kids and buy a house on less than that for many years. He's also doing what he loves and was made to do. I'd rather have be fulfilled and happy than flithy rich and stressed.

Some people live for money. Some people use money to live.

You'll be living far above the poverty level on $50k!

Glad I am not the only one that feels this way. :)

Next time they tell you a nurse's salary is not enough to live on let them know you're well aware of that and you're actually doing the whole thing so you can snag a rich doctor.

Hmmm....I sure hope you will think THRICE if you are in any way considering marrying into that union.

Hallelujah sister!

Can I get an AMEN!!!!

:p

And someone tell me, when did $50K a year become a small salary?

Unless you live in California or New York City, If you manage your money well you will do just fine.

She's a nurse and knows how much they're needed, I would think she would want to encourage you to join the ranks. The more the merrier, as they say. BUT she may also know just how difficult it is and may be looking out for you. Regardless..it is your decision to make. NEVER, EVER let anyone's opinion change your mind about what to do with your life. If you want to be a nurse, then go for it. It's a noble profession and you should be made to feel proud of it and not ashamed. Follow your heart and good luck. :)
