Is Marijuana a medicine?

In my opinion it is.

I have seen it work for someone close to me lossing her battle with Breast CA...worked wonders really physiologically and metally. I have no problem w/ it.

Recreationally...well I stand on that fence, yeah I actually think it is less addictive than ETOH, causes less distruction and harm. Driving under the influence is a lot less risky w/ pot than ETOH, in what I have seen. HOWEVER...as far as everyday use...well back to the alcoholic idea...it just doesn't work with real life, can cause lung problems and can be a HUGE demotivator....So for now I will stay on that fence. But I would love to see the gov legalize it for both, could make some good money to help pay for all those familys without access to healthcare and start up some good health programs for this countries children.

Ever consider what public opinion toward marijuana might be if it were a potable rather than something that is smoked to obtain the desired effect? Wouldn't it be more acceptable if it 's THC could be delivered in a drinkable form as caffeine and alchohol are, rather than smokable, as cigarettes are? After all, no one is offended when people take their nicotene transdermally or in gum form, because it doesn't affect them when the user is using.

Could it be it's method of delivery which offends even more than the drug itself?

Anyway...just a thought.

What bothers me about it is that the majority of the time is isn't being used as a medicine.

If it were legalized for medical used, i am aware that it'll have the similar problems of, say, Oxycontin. Yes it will be prescribed for medical use, but how many people will still get ahold of it "just for the heck of it". That's the problem i have with it.

The problem is that people can and will obtain marijuana for both recreational and medicinal use regardless of it legal status. I don't feel those who need it to battle symptoms of illness, should be unable to get it legally because the moral right feels that the recreational users need to be policed for using marijana in much the same way many use alcohol. Why don't we pursue more realistic goals such as marijuana education, moderation of use and treatment for those who may need it?

Marijuana is an excellent anti-emetic as well as apperitif. My uncle got prescribed rolled joints when he has cancer -- that was before Nancy Reagan.

As far as recreational use...WOOO-HOOOOOOO!!!!!

sbic56: VERY GOOD POINT!!!! Although I am not against it I have never though of it that way...I really like that! What about mfging Total Health Care gum, chew it and no more nausea, chew it before meals, and they all taste good and you acutally have the appitite to eat them, give them to anorexic/bulemeics, how could they not eat something and keep it down, would help w/ the underlying anxieties as well; chew them at home after a bad day...ahhh, relaxation, no yelling at the SO for not having the house cleaned, no yelling at the kids, just mellow!!!:D

Man just think if the Gov legalized it and the Drug mfgs used some and got creative...what could be accomplished!!!!:D

As a side note there is an underground movement that is trying to support AT LEAST medicinal use.. it is called NORML, I am sure there is a website for anyone interested....

Exactly! So far, researchers have been unable to extract the THC in a way that it is usable in another form. Not sure which company prooduced Marinol, which is a start, but needs to be perfected because smoking marijuana is still most effective in relieving nausea.

I feel like the majority of Americans are for legalisation of marijuana for medical reasons. When this happens, all kinds of great discoveries are just beyond the horizon. To not do all we can do with science in this area is a disservice to all.

My uncle was on Marinol for appetite stimulation when he was in the end stages of AIDS,and it worked for him. I definitly consider it a medicine. As for recereational use - I have yet to find statistics to prove that marijauna has serious side effects like other illegal drugs - it is considered to be a stepping stone to other drug use but i know many people who have smoked marijuana and never used other drugs. Cigarettes are proven to have more long term effects than marijauna and they are still legal...Is this a problem???? (and i am a smoker!)

I think it is more a substance used (abused) for recreation than it is beneficial as a med.

Does anyone ahve any info other than anecdotal that is effective as an antiepileptic?

That could very well be, but are you implying that is a reason to deny it from from who could benefit from it as a medicine? Many legal medicines are used differently than intended, ie recreationally, but that doesn't diminish their worth as a medicine.
