Is it a good idea to do a MN right after finishing a BScN?

Published

I am currently in my final year of my BScN and am eagerly starting to plan my future. I have been exploring my options and am considering applying to do my MN next fall. Is this a good idea or is it better to wait a few years before doing a MN? I personally would like to do it sooner than later, but what do I know! Any advice is appreciated, thanks in advance!

I may be the lone voice recommending this, but I would advise waiting. When you do an MN, you need to specialize. But you haven't actually had a chance to BE a nurse yet, so you don't know exactly what you would most enjoy down the road. Believe it or not, what you think you want now may be the last thing that you really enjoy. And something you're sure would never appeal to you may become your heart's desire. So give yourself some time. Be a nurse, take the time to become a competent nurse, and then in a couple of years -- if you still want to -- go to graduate school. Perhaps your employer will pay your tuition.
