Is it former or x military?

Published

I have been checking this site out for awhile because I have been thinking of the military.

Hope this is appropriate for this nursing forum.

Here's my Q. I see a lot of people saying "x" military. I was told awhile back that it is "former" and that "x" is insulting. I have never made that mistake again! I see "x" used here all the time so I was wondering.

Best bet would be to say "Prior Service member"

Gosh, I just say I'm a vet! Hubby is retired from the Air Force and he calls himself a military retiree though he still works fulltime - lol.

The preferred term is Prior. As in I am prior Army. I do say ex Army though too on occasion. Shrug.

Specializes in icu/er.

army vet is fine with me.

Thanks everyone!

I think this is a prime example of the fact that no matter what you do, someone is always going to be upset by it. No-one wants to intentionally offend anyone, and I commend you for trying to find the "acceptable" term for someone who has past military experience, but I find it pretty silly, even petty, that someone would be upset by any of those terms... X- Military, Vet., Prior-Service, Former Military...come on... they all say the same thing, and as I am a "former X- Prior-Service Military Vet." myself, I do not see how any of those titles can be offensive...

Again, just my $0.02
