I am interested in applying to oakton if I don't get into a Direct Entry Master's Program. How many students apply? How many seats do they have? How did you get accepted? Do they use a lottery system or do they go by GPA? Did you have to submit letters of reference and an interview?
I think they say that about 300 apply and about 80 get in (for fall). They have less openings in the spring. There really is no interview process. I had no letters of recommendation or anything. Go to a nursing information session there, they have them all the time. You'll get a list of all the classes you need to have to get in. Basically, a laundry list of requirements. Entrance is based mostly on the score you get on the NLN exam. Then, they go by GPA. You have to be in-district, your 'file' has to be complete. Meaning...take all of the pre-req's or they won't consider you. Also, everyone says take the gen ed's before you go in. It's a 2-yr program but each semester is jam packed with classes unless you take the non-nursing classes ahead of time. If you already have a degree...you should probably meet w/ a counselor to see what classes already meet the requirements. I've taken most of the gen ed's, I have 2 more to take this summer and then 2 to take while in the nursing program. The 2 yr program is actually taking me 4 yrs (going pt. time & working, w/ kids).

Dex, that's awesome! Congratulations.
What classes are you taking? I'm in micro right now at OCC and Organic and am going to apply for the spring program. How was the NLN? I'm taking it in June.
Thanks, i'm still pinching myself. I feel like I finally accomplished something and I haven't even started yet. LOL.
I'm in A&P Part Deux.....and English. I'm taking Human Development & Nutrition over summer. Who do you have for Micro? I was thinking of taking Hutchcraft b/c I had her for Bio and loved her. But, I keep getting warned not to do it. You're taking Organic? Are you planning to go for a BSN?
I thought the NLN was tough. I could have studied for it more. Get a prep book for the NLN. There is one used by those that make the test. It helps you get used to the structure of the questions so you're not completely surprised. Personally, I struggled w/ the verbal section. The terms given are one's i'd heard before but only knew the words in context. The answers will be close so it's hard to tell exactly what it is. Some people are good at this though. I'm not one of them. I ran out of time on the math, it's a good idea to practice. I knew how to do the problems but, wasn't quite fast enough. BTW-you can't use a calculator. I probably did best on the science part. I had a lot of eye questions though...weird. Hadn't covered that yet in A&P by test time. Good luck on the NLN!
Sorry, I talk too much....
I was planning on going for a BSN. However, I wasn't accepted into Loyola and am waiting to hear from Rush. OCC is my third choice. Then I'll complete a RN-BSN program once I'm done if I go to OCC.
I'm not really worried about verbal or math for the NLN. Only the science part. I'm waiting on amazon for my book. It should be here anyday!
It's so weird at OCC b/c all they want are transcripts. I'm like, "You don't really want my GPA or letters of recommendation or a personal statement?" She's like, nope, it all goes by NLN scores.
I have at least 2 friends who are waiting to hear from OCC. Hopefully I'll find out today from them. They should be able to get in. If so, I'll give you their names and you can watch out for them in the Fall. They don't know each other, I know each separately, but they are great people!!
You are the only person I met who has ever liked Hutchcraft. I heard so many terrible things about her, then I saw her in person and she was so different than I imagined!! l'm in Ward's micro class right now. I like Ward. She uses WebCT and has an outline on there which is great as well as Power Point. Some of her Power Points are on her tests. Tests are 75% multiple choice and the rest essay. I was so confused in lab but by the time our lab mid-term came around after spring break, I receive a 46/50. Should have been 47 but whatever.....She is very strict about being on time and attendance, but I like her style. Those are her rules!!
Who do you have for Anatomy?? I would not take those classes over even if you paid me!! Ack.
BTW, where did you take CNA? I might go to Samland. I'm waiting to hear from Rush first b/c I'm caught between signing up for Math for Meds for the OCC program and other pre-reqs for Rush. I just wish I knew where I was going. I'm glad you know!

(I'm sorry if this message is posted more than once. I keep trying to post this but it doesn't seem to appear, so i'm trying again)
dex77 congrats on getting accepted!!! I was on the other Oakton link (anyone from OCC) and I just wanted to say congrats to dex77 & paula7 for getting great scores on the NLN.
Unfortunately, I am still waiting. I'm pretty sure that I did not get in. I scored in the 80s on the NLN but it seems like it just might not be good enough. I just have to vent about Oakton's selection process. Here it goes...
I don't think they should set aside 20 of the 80 spots for "high risk nursing students" that score below the minimum required scores on the NLN. I know three people who scored below the minimum required score on the Verbal section that got accepted for the Fall '06 program. I just don't think it's fair for those who score above average on the NLN. Why doesn't Oakton just get rid of the "HRNS program" and just take the top 80 applicants who scored the highest on the NLN. If you think about it, you have a better chance to get in as a high risk nursing student since they had about 60 "high risk students" qualify for the 20 spots. That leaves 60 spots for the 240+ people who scored above the minimum required NLN scores. If I knew about the HRNS program before, I should have just bombed the verbal section because it would have given me a better chance of getting in as a "high risk nursing student"
I'm sorry I sound so bitter but I just had to get this off my chest. :angryfire
koolaid-i totally agree with you. the process for the student selection seems horrible! i know people who did worse then me on the nln and got into the program??? why is that!!?
as far as the high risk students..i had no idea they set aside that many spots. that's horrible. shouldn't someone like me who is on the waiting list and passed the nln get in? it is very frustrating i agree with you!
best of luck on your letter!
fingers crossed for some good news!!!
let us know!
just wanted to add that i think that is a good nln score and you shouldn't worry!
Unfortunately, I got waitlisted at #12.
Hehe.. i just noticed this today- how ironic is it that this is post #12?!... Maybe it is my new lucky number. Hopefully at least 12 people will not accept their seats this fall. Good luck to everyone! :)
