Is anyone else having a problem finding a job in Philadelphia?

U.S.A. Pennsylvania

Hi Everyone,

I have been working in a nursing home in PA for six months now and want out of there so bad. The state has been called to investigate this place at least six times since I have been there. Everyone keep telling me with a BSN that I shouldn't have a problem finding a job in a hospital, but I am. I am willing to take a job anywhere except where I am working now - but I have not had any luck. Is anyone else having this problem?

Where are U looking? Have you tried any suburban hosp?

Hi emilysmos2,

I have been sending my resume via internet all over. For example: Temple, CHOP, Jefferson, Chestnut Hill, Bryn Mawr, Lankenau, etc. My sister works at Crozar and she went to their HR department and the lady gave her a card and told her for me to apply on the internet - which I have done. I thought it was because I didn't have any experience, but all my friends have jobs in the hospital, as far as I know, I'm the only one that works in a nursing home. Just like anything else I believe it is who you know.

Have you called any of the nurse recruiters? I know that Main Line health is not hiring anymore GN's. You can try Brandywine Hosptial, Lancaster General, Christiana Hosp, and EI Dupont my classmates have received jobs at these hosp, we are not BSN we are from a Diploma program

Good luck

Did you pass NCLEX

Thanks Emilysmom2 for the information, I will try calling them today. However, yes I have passed the NCLEX and have been working for 6 months now.

I will keep you posted.

Hi,

Have you tried any other places like Lehigh Valley or St. Luke's? I hear they both have great training programs for new grads. Are you only appling for a certain shift or specialty? When applying for jobs, I usually follow up with a phone call with the nurse recruiter about 2 days later. If you do speak with them, they will most likely bring you in for an interview. There are probably so many app's right now that many don't even get looked at. Just call and ask to speak with the nurse recruiter, ask if they rec'd your app. If you call them, they pull your online app so they have to look. Good luck in your search.

What about mailing your resume out to the nurse recruiter instead of emailing it to them? I just graduated with my associates in May and applied for soooo many different hospitals/positions and started to get frustrated because no one ever responded. When I sent my resume out through the mail I heard back from three hospitals. The HR lady at St. Chris was kind enough to call me and tell me they weren't hiring any more new nurses; she was so nice. Just the fact that she acknowledged my resume made me feel better.

Also make follow-up calls!!

Stick with it, I know it's rough but there are jobs out there!! :icon_hug:

Thank you all for your support. It is just so frustrating that I spent all that money to go to school and can't find a job. I really don't like where I'm working. We are treated like slaves not employees. Everyone talks about finding a new job, however they have years of experience and they are leaving one by one. It just not that easy for me. However, I will try all your suggestions. Thanks again!

Jefferson has a freeze on hiring nurses right now bc of the budget. I waited forever to get a call back from HUP. This was bc I forgot to write a cover letter. Once I wrote a real good cover letter I got a call back the next day.

One of my classmates was offered a job at Jeff in like Feb and she was supposed to start after graduation. Apparently they retracted the offer because of their hiring freeze. I've heard that they promised their nursing students jobs after graduation so they want to make sure they all have jobs before they hire anyone from other nursing schools. This is just what I heard so I don't know how true it is!

It's true. They promised 40 new grads from Jeff jobs. They don't even know where to put them

Hummmmm. I guess the nursing shortage in Philadelphia is finally over. Never thought I'd live to see the day.
