Is there anyone who has done Excelsior RN program using only study guides?

Published

I have been browsing this site for quite some time and have been getting mixed reviews about which books and study guides are good to use for the tests.

I would much rather only purchase books and/or study guides that I really need. I highly doubt that I (or anyone for that matter) need to buy every book and study guide posted in the EC bookstore.

Any help and/or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance!!

Something really scary -- we'd usually get a patient in the ED that had something going on that I was studying. It was almost creepy!! LOL!! We had a lady come in with a myaesthenic crisis going on when I had just read about it. It was a great feeling to be able to tell everyone what Myaesthenia Gravis was, because they couldn't remember. But it sure does bring home the information, to see it in "real life."

It also seems like every friend/relative I have has or had some kind of health issue so of course I have to grill them on what's going on. It's funny how you notice all these things when you're learning about them. I just learned yesterday an RN I work with had malignant hyperthermia-something you don't see every day but nice to know about just like MG.

Lunah- Thank you so much!

Lunah,

I cannot thank you enough for all the links and information your sharing. I am paying close attention to what books and study materials you used that helped you so much since we're coming from the same background. I know what works for some may not work for others and vice versa but this gives me some perspective of how to flip the role of health care provider as well as learn about care plans and differences in nursing vs EMS.

Glad to help! :)

Advice form a long term RN advocate:

Learn nursing to MASTER content knowledge, not just to pass a test. You never known when the details of a disease process will come back to help or HAUNT you in caring for a patient.

This comment scares me..but I thank you for your honesty. I feel like I am practically mastering content to pass tests, as it is, in my nursing school right now. I am interested in Excelsior because my current college is simply horrible. Do you feel it's a poor option? Thank You

I mostly only used study guides but I don't recommend this. I think one should start out by reading the background material in the texts.
