:uhoh3:Hello everyone!!! I got my CNA license in Feb and have tried since then to get a job at one of the three hospitals(Brevard,fl.).They all tell me I need more experience(I have none).I start back to school Aug 6th to finish the last three class I need to get my license as a PCT.My question is when I get my license for a PCT would I be looked at differently? As a PCT I would have phlebotomy,EKG,HHA,CPR and first aid all behind me.Or am I wasting my time doing the extra classes and just need to look else were for a job?
Yes, I am CPR certified
Great,I am currently at abc taking the cna course, I hope it was all worth becuase the money I paid . I like it so far, everything I am learning is a review for me because I took cna as a major in high school and I passed the state board and all , but never work as a cna. Now 6 years later here I am . I could have just re-test by taking the clinical and written test over, but I didnt feel as if I remebered everything . I am alos looking into the ekg & phelbotomy course at abc, but the price is firece, my goodness. Are you cpr certified, if not try looking into that as well , the more you have under your belt , I beleive the more marketable you are as far as getting hired.
HelloYes, abc does offer the ekg/phelbotomy course. For ny medical training center I believe is in queens. Can I ask did abc help you as far asjob placement or was it just help with yor resume? Things may have change from when you went up until now, but I just wanted to now if they had that same practice of helping with finding a job.
Thanks
I went to the NY School for Medical and Dental Assistants (not sure if they changed their name, now) for phlebotomy. ABC did not assist me with job placement or even a resume, but, I didn't have a hard time searching for a job position at all. Two weeks after I got the certification, I had applied at a nursing home three blocks away from my house and got the job immediately.
I would like to suggest this; I am not sure if they teach you everything about the EKG in terms of interpetation or not, however, if you want to learn to interpet them, consider going to Queens College for their EKG interpetation course. It is nice to know, very interesting and if you ever did in fact, decide to enter nursing school, it is a major plus. And, if you are attending for medical assisting, it would be a great advantage to be able to tell if a patient is having a heart attack. The physician would love you to pieces!

You know, I am really not sure if abc teaches you how to interpet the ekg. I havent taken the course yet .I am looking into othe places that is reasonably priced and the time that would fit my schedule. Thanks for the suggestion.
Good! I'm glad to hear this and plan to start my 5 week nurse tech course (ekg & phebotomy) at the end of this month..I do notice that some of the NYC HHC hospitals hire Patient Care Associates which require these 2 skills. I hope I can get into one of these hospitals to work while I am in school
i would be very interested in taking a 5 week course to gain these skills, im searching near where i live, in bloomsburg , PA and i can not figure out where it is offered. anyone who is more computer literate or just knows, please help! i just finished my cna and am working ltc, but have hopes to take more courses so i can work in hospital setting ASAP. thanks !
I found out about classes by looking in the sunday daily news. I would suggest doing that and if you are in a union, ask your representative about where you can take classes. But the first place U think you should check is the school where you took your cna course. Good luck!

In most cases, they will go over extremely basic things such as placement, and they should at least discuss what P waves, QRS complexes and T waves are. They may show you some of the most dangerous wave formations, but that it about it. For a CNA or Medical Assistant, they just want you to apply the leads correctly and the doctor or a nurse may interpet it. But, if you do know how to interpet them, you are a value to the physician, believe me.
They did not cover EKG at all in my LPN course. I took a seperate course at Beth Israel Nursing School for three days. I had some basic knowledge and was intimidated to take the class, even as a nurse (three days looked intimidating), but they actually taught me alot.
It would be better to learn to interpet them in a slower setting because as nurses, not only are they going over the interpetation, but also of the signs, symptoms and treatments (meds) that should be given related to those. In your case, for now, to interpet them would be a great advantage to you and if you did enter nursing school, you can deal with the rest of it later. Good luck!!
I have been trying to get a cna or pct job at all of the NYC HHC facilities since Nov of last year.
Do you have to "know someone who knows someone" at these facilities?

I tried both, mostly nursing homes since I figured I would have a better chance of being able to work at most only 3 days a week. However, on the postings for these particular hospitals, it doesn't specify that one needs experience. I would like hospital experience while going through my nursing clinicals
Have you also tried the nursing homes ? Or are you just interested in working in the hospital?
