IRSC or Keiser for RN degree

U.S.A. Florida

Published

hello all,

i am in need of some advice from my peers. i am trying to get into a nursing program again. i say again, because i was enrolled in a bsn program at liu son in ny but had to leave because of some family issues. i am living in florida and trying to start my nursing classes again. i have applied to fau, um (both accelerated) but haven't heard back from them yet. i applied to those schools because they require the hesi exam, which is what i took for my previous program. i don't hear back from them until the middle to end of february and i'm trying to implement a back up plan, just in case.

my backup plan is to do the as in nursing either at indian river state college (irsc) or keiser university. my concerns are that they both have different entrance exams. irsc requires the nln and keiser requires the teas. i don't want to keep taking entrance exams so i want to narrow it down.

the pros and cons are obvious between these two schools - public vs private ($$), nclex pass rates are significantly different, and the start dates. i am guaranteed to start at keiser in the fall, i just have to take the teas test and take one additional course, american literature. irsc isn't guaranteed at all though.

my grades are my concern. i have a bs from fsu in exercise science and a graduating gpa of 3.2, but i have a couple of c's in my prerequisites. here are my grades:

enc1101 a

enc1102 a

psy2012 c

syg2000 b

bsc2093 b

bsc2093l c

bsc2094 c

bsc2094l a

mcb2010 a

mcb2010l a

dep2004 c

die2201 b

so, my question to you all is this, do i study my booty off for the nln or just take the teas and start at keiser university in the fall? keep in mind that this is my plan b.

thanks guys!!

Exactly!!! We are in very similar situations!

Ah I see. I was vaguely aware of valencias wait list, thats ridiculous. I had the irsc campus In mind. If money is no factor then I can see the logic behind keiser, heck, one of my friends just graduated and landed a job at the icu ( I hope I can follow suit for future schooling endeavors)

But for me that debt is terrifying. I may be making a mountain out of a molehill here, but right now ive almost reached the limit on my credit card (only $500) and im so stressed I couldn't even fathom 24k haha. All the best to you both

HI, I know this is old, but I found your posts due to our similarities. I am also in FL, living in Okeechobee for the time being, and attending Keiser in PSL.

What you WERE going through, I AM going through lol. I just switched from IRSC to Keiser PSL campus (after going back and forth about two times prior to that). This is my final decision. However, as I know you have experienced as well, I get nervous and start doubting/second-guessing myself due to peoples' opinions and "advice.".... After extensive research, campus comparisons, peoples' actual experiences; Keiser is the way to go, I believe. Yesterday, I got nervous because a friend of mine was telling me what a huge mistake I was making; that she attempted the school and is now waaaay in debt. She said nothing transfers, at all and that it is just a waste of time and money. Mind you, this only scared me due to this person being a rather intelligent and "up-to-par" student..Oh, and she, of course, reminded me of their "terrible" reputation; which, no one can give me actual examples as to why it's so terrible besides her. All I have heard prior was a bunch of, "Oh don't go to Keiser!", "Why not?", "Uh....well, uh...I mean. ..it's expensive."

My arguement, and correct me if I'm wrong, is that a school is what YOU put into it. If you know what you want, are highly motivated and dedicated to your career field, and understand that the future is NOW and there isn't any time TO waste; then I believe anything can be accomplished. You can take a student and place them in Harvard...Best school out there, well, one of the tops. Prestigious, highly-regarded, etc. If they don't want to be there, if that isn't there passion, and if they don't try, they won't succeed. It doesn't matter the school, it's the PERSON, the student who makes the school. It is the faculty, students, organization as a whole that, I believe, make up the "family" of the institution. I can say I never felt more comfortable at any other school besides Keiser. I walk in there and feel very welcome, accepted, and like I am actually cared for academically and even personally. People like to argue that, that is because, "they just want your money; so of course they're gonna kiss your ass." Gotta love people.

Anyway, I guess I've kind of already gotten a grasp of your positive, from what I already read, experience at Keiser PSL. But, are there any other opinions, concerns, advice offerings, etc. that you can give me? And I liked reading in your one post that Keiser is very highly regarded in our area due to the strong graduates...Can you elaborate more on that? What do people say? What hospitals? (if you don't mind the details, sorry.) I don't know how to message people on here yet lol I swear, I am very computer literate and know my way around websites, but I haven't figured this one out yet. Just saying, I can give you my email or something so as to keep PSL's campus and others' information/opinions private. I just really want to know someone, from experience, that actually KNOWS what they are talking about, and can give some concrete examples of successes and/or failures. You know what I mean? I mean, where are you now? Have you gone on to pursue nursing further? BSN yet, moved onto masters? Where have you worked? And again, good opinions?? Examples?

Lol I'm sorry to pry...I just, after what I was told yesterday, kind of need some positive but honest views of the school.

Thank you in advance...

Is your last name lovelace if so we may be related.

Thanks for posting this! I am getting ready to start Keiser in Orlando this summer. My story is similar to yours in that I have a degree and am about to finish my Masters this semester. My ugrad grades are similar to yours, which makes it impossible to get into any accelerated BSN program. The other option is to wait for Valencia but by the time I finished the ASN I will already have a BSN and will have been working for at least two years. It's annoying when people say don't go to a school because of the cost. I can afford the tuition. In addition to that, I will more than make up the cost of tuition by completing my degree faster and spending the two years working vs waiting for the cheaper program. Good luck!

HI There!!

I was recently accepted in Keiser and I start May 2nd (I have A & P 2 left so i am taking it there) and i start the core August 25th. I would love to hear what you thought about their program! Good, bad and ugly would be greatly appreciated! I always enjoy reading when people rip on private schools saying they take anyone. My personal opinion is that some of the other schools are way too ridiculous and competitive and they aren't churning out great nurses. Keiser does not seem to have that problem at all and I think a minimum 3.0 in pre reqs is nothing to laugh at. How important is it that someone makes all A's in humanities and Comp 2? lol Not very :)
