Ireland

Hi all:

i am an American married to an Irishman. We are thinking if moving our family to Ireland. I am a RN with a bsn and am Wound Ostomy and Continence (CWOCN) certified. I have five years experience. I would be very thankful if anyone could answer some questions for me...does ireland have wound ostomy nurse specialists? Am I kidding myself thinking I can get any nursing job??? I see a lot of nursing home jobs posted...are they horrible? What is home nursing like there?? We would like to move to sligo...I know I have to petition to the board. Thank you to anyone who can give me any information!

Hi :)

I am unsure where Silgo is ? Ireland is split up kinda ? Northern Ireland is part of the UK and you would need to apply for your nurse licence with them . Am sorry I don't know who you would need to apply for Ireland that is not part of the UK ?

In regards to your other question .. There appears to be plenty jobs in nursing homes , it's not very clinical and you have a lot of clients /patients. I know I could walk into a nursing home job tomorrow but I like the clinical and acute side of nursing, I hope that helps. Your speciality I have not heard of but am still relatively newly qualified . Good luck

Ps .. I mean to apply to NMC and also just to add there are stoma nurses here , usually a band 7

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

Sligo is Ireland so different board of nursing to NMC. Jobs I think are not good for Ireland but only real way to find out is register with the board of nursing and then look for work. http://www.nursingboard.ie/en/homepage.aspx

Thank you for the info - we are still in the beginning stages of discussion of moving etc - just trying to get an idea of what nursing is like there

First of all congratulations on marrying an Irishman.

Second of all I've heard the Irish nursing market is in a bad way right now, but you have experience in a specialty surely that gives you some sort of a chance.

All the best! It's such a beautiful country!

Lol - we have been married ten ears - the novelty has worn off ;) thanks for the reply!

good luck! Ireland is a beautiful country.
