I noticed there are several good apps on iPhone for use in nursing and good kindle reference books you can get on the kindle iPhone app. Is iPhone usage accepted for those types of things.

Depends on the unit. The place where I work as a student CNM has a policy that says something like "use of personal devices for work related duties only." The hospital where I work as an RN has a blanket no-device policy. But the reality is that everyone has their devices on them at all times. Over all, it is pretty much expected that providers will keep their phones on, but it's a grey area for the nurses.

Make sure that you clearly understand and follow your school's policies - even if they seem inconvenient or illogical. Chances are, they were developed to handle "problems" that occurred long before you came on the scene.
Most hospitals have on-line resources that are available to both staff and students using their facility. You'll probably hear about these when you're oriented to the organization. If not, it doesn't hurt to ask.

At the hospital I work at you are allowed to use tablets/i-pads, but not your "smartphone" (that does the same thing, go figure right?). In the LPN program I am in, we were encouraged to purchase our books electronically to be put on up to 5 devices. I prefer the book in my hand, but I do use my tablet at school and at clinical.
It all depends on where and what.

My school didn't allow any phones at any time. My nursing job was the same. I got used to using my books--drug guides, lab manuals, text books, etcetera at clinicals.
Once I was working as a nurse, I could go in the medroom and use my phone--which wasn't officially allowed, but our supervisors understood. My DON told me to just use the facility computers to look things up.
But I was still fond of my books and brought them to work.
