Hello all! I am a new poster, although I have been lurking on this site for many months. I did try some searches before I decided to post, so I hope I'm not repeating something that has already been discussed.
I am currently a pre-nursing student at a local CC here in NY, and I plan to apply to nursing school for Fall '11. One of the schools I will be applying to requires the TEAS for entry and the other goes by a point system. Neither one requires Chem to get into their program, although the school that uses the TEAS recommends it to help with the test.
My question is...for those of you who are familiar with the TEAS, do you feel like it's necessary to take Chem, or can you do well enough by just studying the guide? Also, is Chem really necessary to do well in nursing school? I have a friend who just finished at one of the schools that I will be applying to, and she said she really didn't need the Chem to understand the material.
I will do whatever is necessary to help me be successful in school, but I am 38 and this will be a career change for me and I just want to move along with my classes. Thank you in advance for any and all advice! :)

I'm a pre-nursing student myself and I have not taken the TEAS so I can't really answer specifically about the chem questions on the TEAS. Interesting that there is a nursing program that does not require Chem.
Have you done A&P yet?
I'm taking A&P I now and Chem is weaved into A&P. On our first exam, a lot of the people that did not do well were the ones that struggled with the chemistry part of the exam. They got through the other parts just fine. Our prof did not even bother lecturing on the chemistry chapter because he said we all should know the material since at my school Chem 1 is a pre-req for A&P. I know it comes up again with Acid/Bases later on so if you have not taken A&P yet I would suggest you bone up on chem if you don't have to take the class. But then again, you may get an instructor who goes over the concepts in detail.
As for nursing school, couldn't tell you since I'm not there yet.

I'm also a little surprised that they don't require at least a basic Chem class for the nursing program; the school I applied to requires both Basic Chem and Organic Chem.. Anyway, I think you can do well enough with just the guide. There aren't many chemistry questions on the TEAS, (maybe 6 or so) and the ones that I got were pretty basic. Even so, if you have the time and it's not going to push you back, I would take an Intro to Chem class; it can only help!

I took the TEAS test. You don't need to take a chem class to pass the science section. Buy or check out the study guide and study that. I didn't study and I got a 83.3% on the science portion. The only questions that got me confused were about life sciences (geology, weather, rock formation...) since I haven't studied that since I was in elementary school.

Are there any recommendations for study guides for the science part for those of us that have been out high school for 20 yrs?
