Gifts/cards etc to thank clinical instructor?
I don't think it's wrong to thank them, but I do think it's wrong for the clinical instructor to tell them to bring something in (sounded like more of a command than a suggestion). FWIW I'm in my third rotation and I haven't thought about giving any of them a gift. None of them have stood out in my mind to the point where I would thank them any more than I already have; heck, I get a different nurse every day and I can hardly remember their names. Not to say that I haven't been happy with them, but gifts? idk, maybe it's a regional thing? none of my classmates have gotten gifts for any of their RN's/instructors either as far as I know. Just to clarify, I'm not against gifts, I just haven't had that 'awesome' experience yet. Hopefully that will change next semester.

Gifts/cards etc to thank clinical instructor?
You clinical instructor told you to bring in something for the floor nurses!? That sounds very unprofessional.. it also seems like a conflict of interest. If you really think they were that awesome then go for it, otherwise I wouldn't do it. If anything, a hand-signed card from all of you expressing your gratitude would be a better idea, IMO.

How long for test grades?
I don't think I've ever gotten an exam grade back on the same day. Most of my teachers will post them in about 3 - 5 days, sometimes it takes a bit longer.. one of my teachers is only at the school one day week so she gets them back from the grader (scantron operator) the week after we take the exam, then she has to take them home and record the grades so we don't get them back until 2 weeks after we've taken it!

Is it worth it? What are your thoughts?
If you're in state consider SCSU.. they program has a lot of pre-reqs (11 total whereas UCONN has none as far as I can tell..?) but you would still graduate with a BSN and it's quite a bit cheaper. (UCONN vs SCSU).. Both schools are CCNE accredited as well.

My Microbiology Teacher told me I can't become a Nurse
Wow, that's incredibly unprofessional! After a comment like that I wouldn't put weight in anything she says, no matter what her credentials. I would be much more worried about your schools low pass rate. Personally, I wouldn't have even applied to my program if it was anywhere near 30%. That's not to say that I don't think I'd be able to do it, but moreso that the quality of instruction must not be very high.. (assuming the applicants have decent grades going in) Nursing may not be for you, but don't let someone else try to tell you that; it's something you need to figure out for yourself IMO. I say you should just keep on putting in 110% and do the best that you can. If nursing really isn't for you, you should know by the first semester. Good Luck!

mnemonic for remembering heart sounds?
All People Explain Their Mnemonics lol j/k FWIW, I learned the Ape to man method too, but after seeing physicians earn too much and people eat three meals, I like those better!

Backpack for school
I have the Wenger/SwissGear Synergy and I love it. It has a really well padded laptop slot, tons of compartments for stuff, and it can hold enough books to make you fall over backwards. Plus it's really comfortable considering how much stuff I put in there. If you need to carry more books than this thing can hold, I would strongly suggest you save your back and get a rolling one. note: this one hold up to a 15.4" laptop, they also make a bigger version, the Ibex, for 17" laptops..

Study Guides & GPA's-Do you get any Guides in Nursing Program?
Almost all of my teachers give study guides because inevitably someone will ask for one. Unfortunately they typically cover every little thing that we learned so they are virtually useless.. I guess they are nice to have so that you make sure you don't forget to study anything, but they are not in any way 'hints' as to what's going to be on an exam.

Practice question that doesn't seem right.
This. Of my limited studying for the NCLEX, I've learned that the questions can be worded in a very tricky manner where one word or word ending will change the answer. Those key words as Nico has pointed out lead to the most correct answer. That having been said, my first thought was also C (Albuterol) and I would have gotten it wrong.

Math Problem help
Are you sure you copied the question correctly? If you did it's 82kg * 400mg/kg = 32,800mg per dose (assuming 1 dose/day). I would guess that something is missing from this equation though since the patient would probably die from that kind of dose.

HESI Tips?
Yup, same DVD case with the little green card.

HESI Tips?
I guess they're not all the same then.. thanks for the info. FWIW, ours also had only 55 questions but was scored to 1350.
-
HESI Tips?
Are you sure your exam was only out of 1000? I'm just curious because ours was out of 1350 and I was under the impression that the Fundamentals HESI was the same for everyone; I could be wrong though.

nursing pins - yay or nay?
I know I'll never wear mine on the job and 99% of the time it will sit on a shelf somewhere.. but as the same time, it's a symbol of accomplishment and all the hard work that I've done. For this reason alone, I'll be buying mine when the time comes. Congratulations on graduating!
