Intro Chemistry OCC or OU?

Does anyone have any recommendations as far as instructors for Intro Chem at OCC or OU? Also, would you advise against taking BIO and CHE at the same time?

Thanks!:)

Hello!

I skipped the Intro to Chem class (I do regret it a bit, but I did fine in Gen Chem 1)

It depends on which campus you're going to for OCC, but I know most of the science teachers as I have attended almost every campus. As far as OU goes, I'm not sure about any teachers.

If you want to know more about the OCC teachers, PM me as I do not want to use their names here :)

I think you'll be fine taking Bio and Chem together. Just make sure to really have all of the concepts down instead of just memorizing. Dedicate a lot of time studying them both and I think you'll do well! :)

Good luck

Hi, Annie,

Thanks for your reply! I guess I haven't posted enough to use PM, so will have to wait on any specific recommendations... I've been nervous about Chem and Bio since I do not have history in these subjects, but am taking math now in prep for these courses.

Have a great day!:)

Because I wanted to apply for OU's Accelerated BSN, I needed Intro to Chem (Chem 1000). I took all my prereq's at OCC. I would recommend the rate my professor site to get an idea about the teachers if you can't get feedback yet.

I also didn't have previous college-level biology or chemistry, but it went just fine. I discovered that I needed extra study time in biology at first, to learn the vocabulary.

If you take intro to chem, I recommend brushing up on algebra. My instructor used a lot of formulas, and she expected us to work on them in class.

The fact that you're brushing up on math now means that you'll do well in class because you know how to study. Good luck!

Hi, MInurse -

I am concerned about study of bio terminology and chem formulas at the same time. I'd really like to get started on both subjects in order to apply to OU SON by next spring or summer, but I don't want to hurt my GPA, either!:(

BTW - thank you for the message, Annie! (AH)

Hi, cs81!

I completely understand about the GPA. You want to be competitive. If there is no one else, perhaps speak with a counselor at OCC and/or OU. I found the counselors at Highland Lakes to be very helpful in developing a plan of study, even though I was upfront with them about my preference for OU.

Only you can determine what would be too much. Some questions to consider: do you work full-time? how easy is it for you to learn new concepts? how much time could you realistically spend studying? We used only a few formulas in my chem class, but we needed to be able to manipulate them mathematically.

I did science pre-reqs in one year (fall, spring, summer) but I don't have a full-time job, so I had a lot more studying time than some others in my class. :)

Also - if you're applying to the OCC program, they do not count those courses towards your nursing GPA.

They just count

ENG 1510 + 1520

A&P 1+2

Microbiology 1510 or Microbiology 2710

POL 1510 (intro to american gov)

PSY 2510

SOC 2510

One credit of PE

3 credits of humanities

HEA 1510 (Nutrition)

If you have chem or bio on your high school transcripts, they will take it with a C or better instead of Intro to Bio or Intro to Chem classes.

Im taking Intro to Chem right now. (had no previous chemistry).

The first few weeks were the hardest, its getting more manageable now overall, but the only problem is that the lab s are about 2 chapters ahead of what we are learning in the class. So, I would have read ahead from day 1 and worked harder if I had realized that. As soon as I feel caught up in class, the next day Im behind again. right now Im trying to catch up and then will start making an effort to read ahead.

This class is kind of time consuming because its 6 hours of class time a week.

Now, I have a question, need to take microbiology of health and disease, any recommendations?

and, i havent had bio since high school, long time ago, will I be lost or can I pick up these concepts with the class reading and work?

Hi Anne36! I tried to pm you, but I guess I haven't posted quite enough. I took microbio of health & disease at OCC Auburn Hills campus. It met once per week for about 3 hours. People who were successful in my class were good at memorizing and attended regularly. There was also extra credit. It was a pretty fun class and not very stressful if you had studied. I thought it was much easier than anatomy! No textbook -- the prof had made his own for us to use.

I took BIO 1530 before I took 1570 since I went to high school during Ronald Reagan's first term :D and also wanted to enter OU's accelerated BSN program. In my particular 1570 class I think you would be o.k. if you had bio in high school. I hope this helps!

Thanks, I am looking for something at Orchard Ridge hopefully. The highland lakes campus doesnt seem to have much of a selection.

I took intro to chem at Southfield. I know that you said you prefered O.R. but I had a fantastic teacher. He is very commited to helping the students succeed. I had not had chem in high school and had been out for 12 years and still got an A.

I took Intro to Chem in Summer 1 (6 1/2 week course) w/ Dr. Muro at the OCC Auburn Hills campus. Its pretty much just as the course suggests, its a Intro class. Its not very in depth but it does give you a solid foundation to build on.
